I really like the 100ATR mainly for the bang per buck. The 4x4 looks like a nice gun too, but they are starting to get out of the good gun for the money price range. I would compare it closely with a Savage before I got it, they also make very, very good guns, and have a really neat trigger setup.

i think if all of us has an extra 8,000 laying around wed all have the M82 barret .50 cal Because theres no kill like OVER kill and hey no one else that your hunting with can shoot a deer that behide a tree behide a car and threw a house with one shot also dont forget .50 cal BMG rounds run you about $5.00 a round that pays for the 651 grains of gunpower and the .50 cal chunk of lead

I'm really surprised that no one told the OP that a .338 (I assume he meant .338 Win Mag) is huge overkill for whitetails, even mulies, more like brown bear medicine.

A .338 is going to have punishing recoil and stunning muzzle blast. So only go the .338 route if it's something you NEED, for hunting the brownies or Kodiaks mostly.. good for long range elk, but a lesser cartridge would serve ya better.

.270, .308, .30-06, 7mm mag.. even 7mm-08 or even .25-06 is all you need for any deer hunting or most elk.

You can't go wrong with any Remington, Ruger, Sako, Savage in those calibers.

As far as optics, if you're going to be hunting deer at 100 - 400 yard ranges then a good quality 3x-9x is all you need. Higher magnifications are more suited to long range varmint hunting or long range target shooting.

Not needed on a deer rifle and you'll pay more for them.

Buying a .338 mag for deer hunting is how those things wind up second-hand in the gun shop with only 10 rounds fired.. LOL
