The house is done!

Hey, guys...

rememeber me?

Well, we finally closed on the house yesterday. I still have a few things left I want to do, mostly outside, but we started moving in over the weekend, and signed all the papers yesterday...

I hope to post some pix, as soon as I can get the camera away from the wife...

Congorats Closer,

Is it your first house? If it is, welcome to being broke for a while, LOL

It won't last forever, it will just seem like it

Congratulations! I grabbed the box truck from work and helped my sons friend and his wife move New Years Eve day. It was cold, but I was glad to help them. Enjoy!

Thanks everyone!

Been very busy with work since the first of Feb, and will probably stay that way till May... Rarely in front of a computer these days... but I promise I'll get pix posted...

Yes, this is my first house...

as far as who built it? I had a friend's uncle and grandfather's company do the concrete, framing, siding, rough plumbing, roofing, windows and exterior doors... I then took over, and did all but the custom kitchen cabinets, granite countertops, drywall (hanging through texturing), and cellulose insulation... and my father-in-law did the HVAC, but I helped a little...

Man, when we had our first one built, I was over there every day, two and three times a day, and every single night- watching those guys. Good thing too because I was able to catch a lot of mistakes before they were made permanent. Checking behind them, making sure they didn't wall-in any sardine cans or honey bun wrappers like they were doing on other houses.

For instance there was one room they were going to cut off by making it a 45 degree connection betwen the north and western walls in one of the bedrooms? We'd told them we wanted a 90 degree corner so we could re-capture that space. The first house was only 1,500 square feet, and we wanted every foot. We probably gained 8- 10 square feet for that bed room, on that change alone.

Sure enough, they framed it wrong. I caught them, and made them fix it. We didn't want the big hearth sticking out into the floor, we wanted it flat, with marble. I go by there, and sure enough, the brick dude had the biggest, prettiest hearth you've ever sen in the middle of my floor. He spoke no English, so I told him to stop, and he got pi**ed off, and threw this spatula (or whatever you want to call it) and walked off. I whipped out the cell, called the builder and told him to get down there. He did, and the heart disappeared.

As much as I was watching them though, I wasn't watching them close enough. We'd ordered the "Riviera I" floor plan. They were actually building us the "Riviera II". They looked identical, but there were subtle differences that made the Riviera II was about 300 square feet larger than the Riviera I, along with a few other extras. We'd already signed the papers for that spot of land, and that house- so we were getting it for the same price. I didn't say anything. We also got a fully covered, valuted (not that lean-to looking thing you see on many houses) patio cover that we weren't supposed to get. I saw that, but- no way was I going to say something about that.

I almost got a free privacy fence (Came with the Riviera II) out of it, but- when he asked me if he owed me one, I told him "no". They already had it staked off with their guidelines and everything... It's a rent house now, so that would've been one more thing to worry about.

First home was brand new, we watched it grow from dirt, to slab, to roof. The second one, was an existing home. So, for as much as we got over on the first one, we got screwed on the second one. Clearly a lot of patch work was done on that house... We had to fix it as we moved in.

Hopefully, the third time will be the charm.

Its real hard to stay on top of everyone, I tried but it is almost imposable. I lived 50 miles away and there were days they did nothing and other days they flooded the house with every trade. I have pics from dirt lot to finished product. The whole house is 4500 sq and I plan on staying in it until I retire.
