Sirius & XM Merge

Well, it seems the DOJ has approved the Sirius and XM merge. I wonder how this will affect the consumer? Do you think all the channels from each service will be available? Up the rates?

I'm hoping to get all the channels......surely they have something brewing....plus what about all the cash they paid out for celebrities to either go to Sirius or XM?

Sirius has some channels I prefer and so does XM.

When I joined Sirius, I paid the lifetime membership, I wonder if this will have any affect.

It will be interesting to see the outcome.

Mel Karmazin and Sirius will be in charge of the new company. I wouldn't think any of the good channels on Sirius will go away. The 2 companies use totally different technologies so it will be interesting to see how they "merge". will they jsut simulcast programs from XM on Sirius and vice versa? There is talk of doing an a la carte offering where you could pay less money for fewer channels.

http://investor.sirius.com/ReleaseDe...cat=&newsroom=

The filing will include detailed programming and pricing plans, including two a la carte options. One option will allow subscribers to choose 50 channels for just $6.99 -- a 46 percent decrease from the current standard subscription rate of $12.95. Under this option, customers will also be able to include additional channels for as little as 25 cents each. The second a la carte option will allow subscribers to choose 100 channels and will allow SIRIUS customers to select from some of the best of XM's programming (and XM subscribers to choose from some of the best of SIRIUS' programming).

You better check up on that lifetime membership. I think it is for the lifetime of the unit, not the service. I am pretty sure when you replace your unit it is no longer a lifetime thing. This is what I was told, I may be wrong.

I am kind of glad they merged, I heard when they merged there would be different packages, kind of like cable, you will pick different tiers for what you want to listen to. You are supposedly going to be able to tailor this to what you want. FWIBT..

That's the way it worked for the ReplayTV and Tivo units when they offered lifetime membership. Life of the unit.

CNN, FoxNews, MSNBC, any news site on this thing called the internet.

Here is one: http://money.cnn.com/2008/03/24/news...ion=2008032416

They talk about the a la carte offering in that article, too.

However, the companies said last year that they would be willing to offer a so-called "a la carte" price plan where consumers could pick certain packages ranging from $6.99 a month to $16.99 a month. The two companies have also maintained that a combined service offering the best of both companies' offerings will cost less than the $25.90 a month that a consumer would currently have to pay to subscribe to both Sirius and XM.

Take a look at this site:

The lifetime is only good for the hardware. If you upgrade or it breaks you are SOL.

I dug this up but it is not confirmed. It may not be true.

The lifetime plan is for the lifetime of the receiver, not the
subscriber. If your equipment should malfunction you can transfer the
lifetime plan up to three times to a new receiver. There is a transfer
fee of $75.00 per transfer. If the unit is still under the
manufacturer's warranty there will be no transfer fee and it will not
count as one of the three.
