Nice places to live in tampa/st. pete?

Well, my gf is looking at going to South Florida for grad school and i will be moving with her in a year. Before we go down there to look around at the campus, is there any housing areas to look at as well. Im wanting a nice apt in a nice area for a decent price, yes i know this is everyones dream. Heres my criteria: safe, under $800 a month, within 30 min of the main campus; and hopefully allows dogs, but if not ok. I know theres quite a few of you guys from this area, so any insight will be welcomed.

I'm from the area, but have not lived there for too long to comment on your question. I think you should be able to come within what your looking for however you haven't mentioned a size yet which will play into it big time.

Tampa traffic sucks though. Most of the highways are poorly designed (as most in florida are) and can't handle the load placed on them. Side streets can be much worse. It is getting better, especially with the redesign of malfunction junction, but you'll definately want to take traffic into account.

For safety sake, you won't really want to be right near the campus as it's not located near the best of neighborhoods. I think if you look to the north of Campus you might find what your looking for. But again, I haven't lived there in a while though I do visit many times a year since my parents still live there. However visiting isn't the same thing as apartment shopping. Good luck and GO BULLS! Well, I say that even though they didn't have a football team when I went there.

Tampa isn't in South Florida. Sorry, I just had to post that. UCF guy here and I always find it hilarious that they named the school South Florida when it is nowhere near South Florida.

I looked on Apartmentfinder.com and found this: http://www.apartmentfinder.com/resul...&CSearchType=1

It looks like you can find a decent place for that price.

Everyone complains about traffic in Tampa and orlando and how poorly the roads are designed. I design roads so I have to laugh at that. People should go to other states to see the roads there before complaining. The problem here is $$. Florida DOT just does not have the money to do all of the proejcts that need to be done.

Which campus, St Pete or Tampa? I'm transfering to St Pete this Fall as a junior. The Seminole area is really nice and close to the water. Plenty of apartments, but not so sure about prices.

I didn't think the roads were that bad either...till I got set up to move to Dallas. Dallas has it's traffic, but the fact that minor roads between neighborhoods have as many lanes as most highways in Tampa says something for sure.

I agree. I'm in Tampa a lot and it's not really a nice area. I'm pretty sure it has one of the highest crime rates in the state. I had a little problem with a cabbie down there one time, it wasn't much fun. I had my debit card number stolen from someone there as well. Must of been at restaurant.

I love Tampa. Now, its suburbs might not be the finest, its still a nice overall city. And heck, you can go to Busch Gardens all you want.

Dang, based on your sig I figured there'd be some flamage coming my way. I'm a Lightning fan. Not a Rays fan though. 1. I'm not so into baseball. 2. The BS with the stadium was just that.

USF didn't have a football team when I lived there. Imagine my suprise when I'm in town and hit a local bar to watch the Gators/Seminoles game and low and behold....people are actually watching some OTHER game on TV. Oh yes, USF has a football team now. I remember when the UF/FSU was the game of the year in that town.

Might want to try looking in New Tampa, just north of the USF area. However, traffic geting out of and into that area is a joke in rush hour as well. I live in Brandon, which is maybe a 20 minute shot in the morning, real close to I-75 (north/south) interstate. I grew up here, and am ready to move on... Tampa has some nice things to offer, beaches, Busch Gardens, 45 minutes to the Mouse in Orlando.. but traffic sux

Consider Pinellas county. Rent is a little less expensive. I would avoid the USF area altogether, not a good area at all.
