Better fuel mileage or not I hate the new front end. It looks similar to a Chevy IMOP. I hate that sqaured off box look in the front. Glad I went ahead and bought a 2008. So far I have averaged 15.2 mpg in my truck. Granted I only have 1300 miles on it. I just got a cover installed and I am anxious to see if that even makes a difference. It is the 5.4L engine.

I call BS on that. I don't believe for a minute towing a 5k trailer that it would even get close to that. He is blowing smoke up your butt.

Something sounds wrong with this. I have gotten 20+ out of a 5.4L 4x4 Supercrew on a long highway trip.

I would crap if I got 20 mpg in my truck. Even in 2001 when I bought it with 30K on it, it only got 15 on a good day. I've driven it across the continent on several trips, and it's not just the gas up here, or the 2 lane hwy's.

I love my Ford, and will drive it till the wheels fall off, but the GM half ton with the 5.3 get's a lot better mileage than it. (that's why we towed the trailer with his truck). Last trip to the lower 48, picked up a 3-horse bumper pull trailer in Alabama... loaded with 2 motorcycles and some other stuff, I got between 4 and 6 mpg.

4-6 WTF??? The lowest I have ever gotten was ~10. That was with 6000-7000 pounds in a enclosed trailer. 15-16 is normal with mixed city and highway.

Read the fine print at the bottom of the window sitcker... it says 20.

It is possible, I was with a group that was running about 65 or so.

The big numbers say 14 -18 the small numbers on the bottom say 20. It can be done. I have done it a few times but not all the time. There are several others on here that have pulled off numbers like this with a 5.4L.

Well, all my 4.6L Ford's did about 18 MPG Hwy (400 + miles), and as little as 7.5 MPG in the city (180 miles), on a tank full of gas.

The 5.4L, I could go about 232 miles in the city (7.75 MPG) on a tank, and 444 (14.8) miles on the highway. That's doing the math (30 gallon tank).

This new truck (2006 4.6L SuperCrew) I can drive 10 days to work, (240 miles in the city) on a tank- if I run it until the gas light comes on- (but it's got a 30 gallon tank). Mathematically, that's around 8 MPG (+/- a few decimal points). On a 424 mile trip to my home town, when I get there, I'd have about 1/8th of a tank left, which is about 16.25 MPG).

Going by the trip meter, that 5.4L Expy never got over 14.3 MPG.

So, I don't know how you guys are getting 20 out of the 4.6L or 5.4L...

After five full sized Ford trucks, and 114,000 city/highway miles, I have my doubts...

The only way one's gonna net 20 MPG consistently in an F-Series, is if the trip there and back is downhill, both ways. Or, you live in Kansas- where the whole state is flat.

Under the new EPA measurement requirements, the Chevy Suburban is getting between 18 and 26 MPG on the highway- which is why they put the Average at 22 MPG.

I have yet to buy a Ford that got less than the epa sticker. My 2005 focus ST is the best so far. It is rated 31 hiway, I have gotten 36 hiway with it. And yes I did the math right. My truck is the worst. It is rated 18 hiway, I get 18 hiway. I have never gotten less than 16.7 mpg in my truck. So I would say it is not unusual to get what the epa says. At least with Fords. While these trucks are mass produced, the fits and tolerances are very close on each vehicle. The computer program may make some differences, I don't understand why Ford has so many HEX codes.... but all the vehicles in the same driving situation should get the same milage. Drivers make a big difference too.

It indicates 16 mpg average with the 5.3:

Is that the one with Cylinder deactivation? That's a 3 MPG average difference... Hmm, Now I gotta go do some research... Maybe that 22 MPG was on the old system.

Then again, in my experience- I think the only way we'll get what that sticker shows as the average, is with very manipulative driving, and ideal conditions.

The only cars I've had that exceeded the MPG rating was my Chevy Cavalier, or 2006 Fusion, and the 2001 Civic. In that Cavalier, I could go 5 hours (over 300 miles) on the highway, and only be down to half a tank in that car- and it had a 16 gallon tank- so give or take a gallon, she was running about 37 MPG. I think it was rated at 31 MPG (which sounds good, until you realize the 3 times more powerful, V8, Corvette of that era was getting 30 MPG on the highway).

The two more disappointing vehicles were my 2006 Acura MDX, and the 2000 Altima SE. In the city, tha Acura's gas mileage was dismal. Less than 14 MPG, and most of the time I was in the 12's or 13's, and this was a V6 mid-sized SUV. But, on the highway, she'd come into her own, and I've knocked down 26 MPG in that Acura. But, she required Premium pump fuel, another knock in my opinion.

The Altima we had was an i4, and had 180 HP. So, I guess when you wring out what was (back then) v6 horsepower from a 2.3L 4 cylinder- your gas mileage goes into the toilet. That little joker was thirsty- but we only put it on the highway once, so I can't tell you what it'd do on the highway- but I know in the city, it's gas mileage was not impressive.
