This should work...
Charge your ipod overnight. Then take your ipod and place it next to your keys on a flat, smooth, hard surface, your table or the sidewalk or just about anything will work. Next find a hammer just in case, generally the larger the better. Try your reset. Then if it doesn't work, start by dropping your ipod from increasing heights until it starts working. I suggest starting at 3 inches, then 6, then 12 etc. If that doesn't work, use the hammer viciously. Then use the keys to drive your happy self to the store and buy a zune or some other mp3 player that isn't completely overhyped and over priced.
Good luck.

Basically if you take the iPod and start to lightly hit the edge of the table with the side (long side) of the iPod, hit the table harder if it doesn't work at first or if you think you're hitting it pretty hard already, then switch to the other long side, it will bump the Hard Drive read/write arms back into place. Sometimes they can get bumped out of the swivel tracks.
Mine did that a couple of times, like it was completely dead. I left it hooked to my computer overnight and it seemed to fix it. (Mine also didn't notice it when I first plugged it in)
I had it Direct Connected to my Alpine IVA-W200 so it shouldn't have been draining the battery, but it did a couple of times.
