I only have 2 shotguns. #1-Winchester 1894 in 16 gage. It was my grandfathers. It has a lot of history. #2-A Mossberg 12 gage riot gun. I got it from the Utah Fish and Game for $20.00

I have absolutely no complaints with my old 20ga 500, I got it used and have probably had it for 10 years and I still love it. It shoots at whatever I point it at and doesn't jam. The only thing I don't like about is that it is a youth model, but when you are wandering around in a typical Iowa winter you have enough clothes on that it makes up the difference and puts it back into its sweet spot. Kinda awkward shooting clays in the summer though, but I don't do that all that often anyway.

My dad got a 12ga 870 Express, it is about as accurate as a baseball pitcher throwing a beach ball. Plus it jams at only the most unoppertune times, after several years of giving the 870 a chance he has switched back tothe 20ga 500 (that he got used before I was born) that the 870 was intended to replace. His is probably has a fluke, but I see no reason to replace my perfectly working shotgun with one of those.

I also really like the safety up on top and in plain sight, rather down below.

BTW if you just want a cheap gun to chase people off with you can get a NEF Pardner shotgun but in .410, 20, 12, or 10 gauge for about $100 used. I think my brother payed about $90 for his 10 guage in perfect shape from Scheel's. They also have a bunch of rifle calibers available as well. It is a single shot (break action), but if you almost hit someone with a 10 gauge (kinda hard to miss I think) the chances of them sticking around for shot #2 would probably be slim to none anyway. The basic design of the gun has been around for over 100 years as well, great bang for the buck IMO.

When we were at the range this weekend, a guy out there was shooting a barret .50, it was ridiculous. You'de be lining up to shoot and all of a sudden a loud BOOM and the ground would friggin shake, and you'd be like "oh, he shot again."

Insane being next to a gun that is capable of piercing tanks when it is fired. Reminds me of a cannon.

I would pay for the 870 over the Mossberg anyday. All you have to do is handle them both and you can feel the superior craftsmanship in the Remington. Also they have made over 10 million 870s. That is a tried and true firearm. My first choice is my browning citori OU, but for an everyday workhorse, go with the 870.

Yeah I agree. I had a Mossberg 500 once and while it functioned ok, I could never get over the slop and noise from the forestock.

There ya go right there with what this man has told ya is the way I'd go. For an all around gun, I'd go with the Remington 870 (Wingmaster if you can afford the little extra, just a little better quality then the Express) but if you can't spring the extra bucks then I'd go with the 870 express. I own and use quite a few different brands of shotguns and the Remington 870 will be your best buy for the money. It's pretty good quality for an all around gun. The Browning Citori O/U in Trap grade is a great gun, this is what I like to use. Hell, Browning anything is a great gun.

If you don't like the pump action shotguns and want to step up a notch to a semi-auto shotgun, I would go with a Beretta A391 or A390 which are a very nice gun to shoot. You can use it for just about anything as well and it's really a very nice gun to shoot with hardly any kick which your going to get out of any pump gun. Browning Gold Hunter is another very nice shotgun as well. A semi-auto gun is much nicer to shoot then the pumps and you can find a nice semi that doesn't have a lot of kick with just about any reputable quality gun maker. There are many different types of guns out there, the best thing to do if you really don't know what to do and don't like any of the advice given to you, then buy a book and read upon the ones that your interested in, borrow and use a relatives or friends guns to try different ones out or go to a gun store and talk to a knowledgable salesperson
