ah, but the adult video industry backs HD-DVD. I think that will carry more weight.
I had a feeling that when Disney backed Blue-Ray it was pretty much over. However...I have a feeling that it won't matter as everyone will just have DVD players that can play both and they might both stick around. It's not like Beta vs VHS where they were two different sizes and pretty much impossible to do both in the same machine without it being freaking huge. As if the original VHS players weren't huge enough.
As for the **** business....who buys DVD's when there's the internet?
HD **** though...hmmmm...

I don't know if I like the thought of HD **** some of those women are pretty nasty
I kinda figured that Blu ray would win now all I need is a HD TV. Oh yeah and welcome back Dave

It is more than Walmart. BestBuy, Netflix is also going BluRay. Also it is been "announced" via reputable sources that Toshiba will announce they will stop making HD-DVD players this week.

I'll wait for the official announcment. I read somewhere that Toshiba announced on Friday that it would cease making players, but I believe it was an interim thing.
I've always thought my house would be dual format due to Disney, anyway.
VHS vs. Beta... that was a different story. Beta (a sony product) is by far the better format. It didn't get the popularity vote because Sony wouldn't share the technology. Sony learned their lesson w/ that fiasco. They practically gave away the technology this time. But you are right about the different sizes (form factor) of the media. With HD DVD and Blu-Ray, the capacity is different.
One of the major drawbacks to Blu-Ray is DRM. If I buy a DVD of a movie, I should have the right to make a copy for personal use: for backup, to preserve the original media, or even to put it on my portable media player for viewing in the truck. I don't think Blu-Ray will allow that. And someone explain to me why Blu-ray has double the space on the disc, but they can't put some of the special features on there like they can with HD DVD.

As far as the players, that is all Toshiba makes. All DVDs come from the movie production companies.

From what I understand, Blu-Ray does include the region coding, HD DVD does not. But I guess I'm not up to date on the DRM for Blu-Ray... I thought it was different. Yeah, I knew Toshiba just made players. I'm pretty sure I read that they were going to halt production for a while. As to the disc, I don't know that anyone has stopped making them, yet. Paramount and Universal are still making HD DVDs for release. Even Warner Bros. is going to continue until June or July. BlockBuster was exclusive Blu-Ray, but Net-Flix is a new announcement. As is the Wal-Mart announcement.
As to the pressing of the disc, isn't HD DVD just a change to the current equipment, whereas Blu-Ray is all new equipment?
This is great news...
I had already chosen blu-ray when we bought the PS3 last year for Christmas 2006. My son and I went in half and half to buy it. I have since bought about 50 blu-ray movies. My son got a 50" plasma for his bedroom this year for Christmas, and he decided that he wanted the PS3 in his bedroom connected to his TV. I told him he would have to buy me out, but I caved. Today, during lunch, I went to the Comp USA that was closing near my work, and they had a bunch of blu-ray players marked 40% off. I picked up a Sony BDP-S1, regularly priced at $799, for $419. I called home, since there was no school due to President's day, and told him that he could move it. I called back 15 minutes later to tell him he had better not take my HDMI cable, and he had already moved the PS3 to his room and taken my HDMI cable. I am going to have to whoop some a$$ when i get home!
Blu-Ray Murders HD, Toshiba Pulls the Plug
Saturday, February 16, 2008 10:23 PM
HD is officially dead. Funeral expected as soon as next week.
Toshiba has admitted defeat, and will officially pull the plug on their HD format, according to a company source.
HD suffered its final blows when Netflix and Walmart both announced their decision to faze-out the discs in favor of the Sony-backed Blu-Ray.
“We have entered the final stage of planning to make our exit from the next generation DVD business," said the unidentified company source.
An official announcement is expected as soon as next week.

At the last announcement, Warner would continue for a while making both Blu Ray and HD DVD, however, if Toshiba stops making players, I would expect them to drop the format early.
Blockbuster did have HD DVD in about 250 stores, but the rest were BR only.
It was also expected that Paramount/Universal would announce they were going to make BR too, even before this last week, rumor only, but still out there. Also BestBuy announced this week they were going to recommend BR over ND DVD to their customers, although they would still sell some HD DVD.
As far as disk production, you are correct in that it required special equipment for disk production. Sony, earlier this year though had announced they had made disks that had organic coatings and could be used on existing DVD production lines. When that would come into play, I don't know.
The **** industry had announced early last year they were going HD DVD, and I expected that to be the end of BR. However, they later changed and are now going BR.
As far as what I picked, it is BR. Back in October, it just seemed that BR was going to win. Even one of the local Best Buys had expanded the shelf space for BR, but not HD DVD. Just seemed the writing was on the wall then.
For info on movies etc
www.bluray.com - BluRay only
www.hddvd.org - news on both formats.
Edit - Just another little article I found. It seems the price cuts on BluRay (at least for disks) may have already started.

Just when I finally figured out how to set my VCR!
It is now official. Toshiba quits making HD DVD players and recorders.

Yeah... I just read the news over at HDDVD.COM. Didn't take long to become official.
I'm dissappointed, but then again, not. I haven't really lost anything by owning a HD DVD player. It still up converts, and I have several titles in HD format. Now I get to go on a shopping spree for other titles. And, like I posted earlier, my house would've been dual format anyway w/ Disney being blu-ray.
Wonder when the prices on those will drop.

...The day I bought my first PC in Dec 97, was the day I never bought another skin mag or had to sneak in to one of those adult shops wearing a big winter hat, sunglasses and a scarf.
