Of the two issued sidearms (Colt 1911 (.45 Cal) and Beretta M9 (9mm)) I had while in the service, I would take the .45 over the 9mm anyday.

M1911A1,the weapon that guarded the free world. To hell with that NATO crap. The Italians make nice cars, but I'll take a American made 45 any time.

I have a Walther P22, depending on what version you get they run from about $250 to $320ish. It's a little finicky with ammo, and it's not as accurate as like a Ruger MKII or Browning Buckmark, but it's accurate enough to make pop cans dance from 25 yards out.

I have a Marlin 60 .22 rifle as well, I think they're about $250 at Walmart, it's a fun little rifle.

Why's that? I don't remember the modle number, but I'll be sure to check it out. I like my brother's Sig a lot. I think I can get one for 300 something. Might go that route.

Quintin is right. If it is the Sigma series, pass on it. I have handled quite a few Sigmas and they are not S&W best effort at a "plastic" gun. I moved from a Glock 30 (45 acp) to a new S&W M&P 40. Loved the Glock but I can shoot the M&P much better which is more important in my book.

As far as the recommendations on the 22 cal. I have a tricked out Ruger MKII Competition Target with a lot of custom work done to it by a local pistolsmith. When I open the gun safe, 99% of the time that gun gets pulled out. It's a blast to shoot - all day long.

For carry, check out the M&P series of guns.

I have an springfield XD45, I like that gun.

But If I were you, I'd go ahead and get a S&W model 500, those are very effective for personnel protection

I'd like an opportunity to test the new H&K HK45 or the HK45C.

Me too, except that all the twins currently are expensive Italian, or Hardly Ableson. There is always that sweet rotax powered Buell, but dang...it's friggin ugly. If only Suzuki would have produced an SV that's better than the old TL.

The best advice I can give you is to try lots of guns at the range before you buy. Don't be afraid to try a revolver.

My first handgun was my S&W 686+. It's a 7 shot .357 with the 4" barrel. They are going to have to bury me with it, because they won't be able to pry it from my cold dead hands. I bought it used for under $400, and since then I have shot well over 4000 rounds of .38 special and .357 mag through it, and it seems to have no wear at all. Since then, I got an H&K P7 (9mm), and a Beretta NEOS .22lr, but if could have only one, I'd keep the 686 because of its versatility. I can shoot the cheap, mild mannered .38's through it all afternoon, or I can blast some angry .357's downrange when I need to let off some steam. As for home protection, the .357 offers legendary stopping power, especially with some good SD rounds.

I like the Ruger 22lr pistols. I have a MkII Government Model with the 6-3/8" barrel. Accurate and cheap to shoot. The armory has everything from a 22lr single shot thru a 45 Xd to a Ruger 44mag. The one I shoot the most? The Ruger 22lr. Ammo prices have gone thru the roof as of late, but you can still buy the 22lr cheap and have a lot of fun with very little cost.

This is a MKIII which I have not shot, but might have to check one out.

Berettas are so easy to take care of.

As an Armor for my Company... These pistols are friggin easy. Pretty accurate. The 1911's are a tad heavy comparably, but the px's are really nice.

That's the same 686p I have. I love it. Also I've shot an HK45 and liked it. I'm still partial to my usp though.

My two cents 1911's are pretty and very effective, but they are a crappy combat/concealed carry gun. Why? Too many things to go wrong, manual safety, heavy, and tough to conceal. Yes they make micro 1911s, still too heavy and that manual safety. IMHO, revolvers are great for concealed carry if you like revolvers...I'm not a revolver person. I prefer Walther P99 in whatever caliber you are comfortable with....I like the snappy .40 S&W myself, great velocity and knock down power.

Since I am confident with my ability I now carry a Walther PPS, which is by far the most concealable gun I own. Thin, light and fun to fire. It's chambered in 9mm and I'm OK with that. One shot is all it takes.

I am a Benefactor level LIFE member of the NRA, a certified instructor and have had a concealed carry permit for over 15 years. For what it's worth.

I have a gun safe in my console of my 2006 KING RANCH; really cool and plenty of room for my hardware.

Enjoy and feel free to PM me with questions.

Craig
