I don't remember the exact sequence, but as you go through the payment ritual, right near the end it shows you the payment method and there is a small link that says something like "change payment method", or "change payment account". It's very near the end, after tax, shipping, etc. is figured.

I think it always defaults to the checking account. You must change it to Credit Card with each transaction.

OP, serotta's right. I believe by default Paypal is set to work with your bank account first. Paypal says it is faster but I have never had a problem using the CC instead. The only benefit that I can truly see is that you can have the payment done and behind you already vs on the CC that you have to pay down the road.

Yes, the default payment is your bank account. Toward the end of the transaction there's a choice to switch funding options. Keep in mind that although you can use your CC with PayPal, not everyone who accepts PayPal is set up to accept CC's. You might want to verify with your recipient that they can accept CC's before you use it as your funding option.

If you use a CC through paypal the seller still gets the money via paypal and paypal charges your cc themselves to get the money back. I've never seen a charge on my cc statement that came from a seller, it always comes from paypal.
This allows people that are not setup to take cc's to still let you pay with one.
