It seems (According to his hyper-accurate, pick one car out of a pack, look-down, shoot-down radar) that I was speeding. The irony of the entire situation is, I may have been speeding, but I was one car in a pack of 7-9 vehicles, and I was being passed at the time (I-20). Through all that commotion, he came down off the hill, turned the lights on, and got me.
I asked, "So- you picked me out of that entire group of cars?" He said, "Yeah- I know, everyone's driving fast today, but I just happened to key on you, and my radar shows you were doing 84."
Lucky me.
I was hoping I'd get a warning, but- no such luck.
He was a local police offier, not a state trooper- and he clocked me outside his city limits. For a second, I thought about fighting it- but I remember my uncle's advice that the judge will never go against the officer- and my fine coudl be higher. When I stopped my car, I was right by the city limit sign (entering town).
Oh well, God KNOWS I've sped- a lot over the last 23 years, and this is the first time I got caught. The only thing I'm pissed about, is the fact that this was a BS stop. I was moving with the flow of traffic... I think he picked me because I was the only dumbass who stoped the car (at wife's insistance). I never stop, because to me- that's admitting guilt.
No way he REALLY targets my truck out of a pack of cars... What about the SOB that was passing me? It's like we all noticed him at the same time- but, they kept going, and like a dumbass- listening to my wife, I stopped...
I hear if I go to defensive driving, they'll waive the ticket, and I don't have to pay the fine... any Texans get a ticket recently and can recount your experience.
Damn, if this had happened in Louisiana, my friend is an attorney, and said he could get me out of any ticket- anywhere in Northern LA.
Wish he had some pull in East Texas.

Not to be a jerk, but how was this a "BS stop". Was somebody else in your car with their foot on your accelerator? You readily admit that the posted speed for that stretch of road is 70mph and you were in excess of that. Honestly, who cares what the operators of the other vehicles were doing. It is your personal responsibility as the operator of your vehicle to stay within the law.
Having the "ticket dismissed" is not an accurate use of terminology. You will still be required to appear in court, pay court fees, pay the "State Driver Record" fees, and pay for the driver's training course itself. All of this may be slightly less than the citation itself. The main benefit is to keep the infraction off of your driving record (no points), thus preventing an increase in insurance premiums that may last for three years.
If you do decide to take the driver's training course make sure that the course that you take is approved by the Texas Education Agency or it will not apply to the dismissal of the citation.

Further more, check with the court on the back of your citation to make sure that you are even eligible for a possible dismissal before taking the course. It is important that you must have received approval from your court before you take the defensive driving course for the purpose of ticket dismissal otherwise it will not count towards ticket dismissal.

Ticket Dismissal
Fortunately for those who hold a Texas driver license or permit, if you meet certain criteria, the state dismisses one traffic ticket per 12-month period upon completion of a state-approved course. This holds for those who:
* Do not hold a commercial driver license (CDL).
* Plead guilty or sign a statement that declares he or she does not contest the ticket (nolo contender).
* Were cited for speeding but did not exceed the posted speeding limit by 25 or more mph.
Please note that the court makes the final call on whether drivers are eligible to dismiss a traffic ticket upon completion of a defensive driving course. Therefore, it saves time and money to get permission from the court before completing a course. The court's contact information is located on the ticket itself.
Keep in mind that if you receive a ticket after you take a course for education or insurance discount purposes, you cannot use that course completion certificate to dismiss the ticket. You can only complete the course to dismiss the ticket after the date you received the citation.

If I go through a speed trap and I know it's too late, I usually don't even bother slowing down. Figure the cops like to have to floor it every now and then. I've been driving for a little less than 4 years, been pulled over anywhere between 13 and 16 times, and have received 1 speeding ticket. And around these parts the best way to get out of it is to pay one of the lawyers $75 or whate4ver they ask for, and they'll go to court for you, plead no contest, have the points and fine taken away, and they'll send you a bill a couple months later telling you what you owe in court fees. Usually the judge will charge you the same amount in fees as the original ticket was, but sometimes you get a break. A buddy of mine who has done this probably 9 times in the last 5 years was given a moving violation for something he did which caused the total destruction of his truck and another car. He payed the lawyer like $50, and the judge dropped the ticket, and charged him nothing in court fees. After he totalled two cars.
If I were you, I would contact a lawyer and tell them this is your first speeding ticket in 23 years. Chances are, they'll tell you they can get it completely dismissed. But you could just do traffic school and pretty much accomplish the same thing. After all, it's really about getting those points taken off, not how much you have to pay to do it.

go the DD route. mine was 22 over.........i payed 103 in court costs+25 for defensive driving+and i think 5 for Texas Driver Record (you have to send in a form to get this from Austin or Houston) and....the course is pretty fun..you get to learn a lot of neat things that you probably would not have learned..

Yes, I was speeding. The second thing that made it BS was that fact that I wasn't even in the city limits yet, and got pulled over by a city cop. I know a cop can chase you beyond city limits if you're speeding, but I didn't know they could initiate the chase before you even reached their city. That's what I mean by BS.

As for DD, yeah- I took a course in 1996 after getting my first (and before 12/31/2007) only, moving violation. It was a 2-day course. I know they have one at Hyena's which is a comedy club in Arlington, TX. If I gotta do this, I might as well laugh at it.

That's weird. I just got pulled over on the 31 st of Dec., for the first time in years. Considering the amount of driving I do, that's not bad. I was moving with traffic, too. Three lanes of traffic. I was in the far left lane, and needed to get over, since my exit was coming up in about a mile or so. There was an empty space; but, the car in the far left lane had his left turn signal on. I didn't want to get hit coming over. (I was in his blind spot.) Well half of a mile later, he still hadn't come over and was just driving with his turn signal on. I couldn't slow down and get over behind him because traffic was backed up behind us in all three lanes; but, there was lots of room ahead in the center and far right lanes. My exit was coming up quickly. Traffic was moving at 75 in a 60. I accelerated to 80 to get around. Once my maneuver was over (Which I made very cautiously, since turn signal guy might still choose to switch lanes on me.), I looked in my rearview and had flashing lights coming up behind me.
I spent 15 minutes on the side of the road being chewed out, and called an awful driver, by a State Trooper that didn't even see what was going on. I yes sir-ed and no sir-ed him through his rant, and got a warning ticket. Honestly, the guy sees enough crap going on out there, that I could see his point of view, and I didn't see the point in arguing with him. After all, I WAS speeding. He was especially upset with my licence plate for some reason. It says "SLOWPOKE".

If I still had my military ID, I think I'd have gotten off, I can't put my "US ARMY" license frame on the car anymore, because that's a $200 ticket in Texas, in and of itself. Obstructing/Obscuring the License plate.
See if they offer deferred adjudication. You still pay the fine and court cost, but if you don't get another ticket in that town over the next 6 months, doesn't go on your record.
