Fraternity, Sorority or neither???
Ladies and Gents - Just out of curiousity, those of you that were or are in college, did you join a Frat, Sorority or neither...
I went to Michigan State and Frats and Sororities didn't seem to be as popular while I attended (class of 98), but that could have changed by now. U of Mich on the otherhand, is almost all Greek.
And no, I wasn't in a Fraternity. There's about 10-15 of us that still keep in very close contact and get together at least once or twice a year with everyone. Those of you that were Greek, do you still talk to any of your old Brothers or Sisters? Did being in a Frat or Sorority help you land a job or hold any benefit outside of college?

I went to the University of Central Florida. I played football there but never joined a frat. I chose not to pay to have friends and go to parties. I guess it could be a good thing if you come from another state and do not know anyone but I went to college about 2 miles from where I went to highschool.
I'm in college now. Joined a fraternity (Sigma Chi) my first semester. One of the best decisions of my life.
I didn't join it cause I though it'd be the cool thing to do, I joined because I liked the guys and what the fraternity represented.
I can see why someone would join a frat/soroity if they went to an out of state college, but when you stay in your hometown and have plenty of close friends there really is no need. Unless you want to start distancing yourself from those old close friends of yours. I went to college in my hometown and i have many friends that i feared i would start neglecting because of obiligations to a frat.
At Texas Tech that seems to be the big thing to do joining fraternities or sororities. Personally I aint goin too, like someone above said I dont need to pay to have friends or go to parties....I know one guy down there that payed over 2100 dollars to join....SCREW that, I can use that cash on truck mods...
Lambda Chi here!
I went to school out of state, and never really thought anything of frats, but a good friend of mine from highschool started hanging out with some frat guys, and before I knew it I was too, and then I was one of them...
I would never say I paid for friends. I paid dues to keep things going, and experience things non-greeks will never understand...
I don't regret it... however, I only talk to one of those guys, and I knew him before the frat. My uncle was a Lambda Chi there too, and I still see him quite often...
I still get the newsletter, and keep up with what's going on at the house, just don't have time to go back...

Hmm... I actually saved money by moving into the house. Living in the dorms is about $3K per semester. Living in house is $2k per semester, plus its hard to beat 3 hot meals 5 days a week, and the only walking I have to do to get there is go downstairs. I definitely wasn't paying for friends. If I was, I would have joined another fraternity at the school (which will remain unnamed)...

Spent 1973 & 74 in the Navy before I went to college. Didn't feel like teaching all the amateurs how to drink.
Hockey was huge, because I was neutral, I ref'd the frat championship game 2 years in a row.

I joined a fraternity---the college I attended, well, that was the social life---it revolved around the fraternities and the sororities. Even the GDI's had a club of their own... I am a Kappa Sigma.

After going to school in state and close to home, I decided to join a fraternity because I felt it was the right thing to do. I personally feel that anyone who says we "pay for friends" simply hasn't experienced anything that people inside of these greek organizations and feels that this is what they are for.
I definitely didn't pay for a single frat brother of mine and take that remark very seriouslly. I am in the same fraternity as my father was in along with my uncles and my friends, both my fraternity and other fraternity's.
Whether people join or not is up to them, everyone must make this decision by themselves however, its not right for everyone.
I was not only the fraternity President two consecutive years but also was student body vice president and met/made just as many friends doing that as in the greek organization.
I am diehard greek, and feel that it is for some, and not for others. But either way, Ill never regret being part of one of the largest fraternity's in the nation, along with many prosperus alumni, and many connections in life.
Im a Phi Kappa Tau, for life.
