Which bible to get, King James, NIV, or NLT?
My church gave me a King James version when I was 10 years old.
What a terrible thing to do to a kid.
Varily, varily I sayeth, whosoever heareth when I speaketh or readeth what I wroteth doth taketh thine chances that what they behold may not be so, and truly they shall misseth the buseth.

My recommendation is to get the NIV. It's the easiest to read. All translations have their semantic issues (including the King James). Even with all the minute variations in the translations... they all agree on the important issues. So don't sweat that you may be missing something major... and don't get dogmatic over the minor stuff without reading additional translations.
Additionally, instead of just reading cover to cover... I recommend reading chapters of Proverbs while reading the other parts. Proverbs sets the rhythm of what is being said throughout. Every good meal has meat and potatoes. Each of the books are a type of meat... Proverbs is the potatoes.
Most importantly, the big mistake everyone seems to make is reading a biblical story and identifying themselves with one side or the other. One side good and the other side bad. Both sides are bad. There is only one good guy in the entire bible and his name begins with a 'J'. Everyone else is wicked... including you and especially me.

I bought the blue study NIV Bible from Wal-Mart (don't know the name) for a Bible class I took. I think it has two column, just don't remember what each one was.
Also have a Latin American "Biblia" that I got while visiting the Basilica in Mexico City.

Other threads are evident to that.
However, if someone expresses a desire to take a spiritual journey, I don't want to be a hinderence.
ddgarcia asked a reasonable question here.
I'm holier than thou but, you won't hear it from me.

The biggest reason I promote this work is because it gives a person the ability to think it through for themselves.

Agreed, and...
the e-sword project (thanks for correcting the url) is totally for free - the guy is doing it out of his desire to share God's word with other folk. His tag line, "..freely have you been given, freely give" (I am paraphrasing, and the line is from Scirpture) really stands on its own.
there is also a nice, free application for Palm PDA's - "Olive Tree". not as extensive as e-sword, but has multiple bibles, commentaries, other books about the bible and is searchable.
For Mac people (I am one), there is Mac Sword. Also free. Not nearly as nice as e-sword but just as usable.
Hope these resources bring much fruit,

I'll second "The Message" as a great Bible for beginners.
But my BIGGEST suggestion would be not to try and read the Bible cover to cover in that order, but to instead join a Bible study with other knowledgeable Christians who can go in a better order, AND help to explain the connections throughout. It sure made a HUGE difference for me...
