Thanks a bunch guys

It's kind of like when somebody brings you something and says, "Damn this smells horrible!", you gotta take a whiff

Note to self, stay the hell away from brown recluses!

Yeah, I got a pic a few years ago. This guy got bitten in his bed by a brown recluse. The first day, the bite was a red mark the size of a quarter. 10 days later, the hole in his leg was so big, with all the dead tissue, you could see the bone.

I'm sure they had to amputate that leg.

It's bad enough you have to worry about losing limbs to diabetes, car wrecks, gunfire, war- etc... But, to lose a limb due to an insect bite...

Insane...

A kid died in my hometown about 25-30 years ago. During the autopsy, they shaved his head, and found a black widow spider in there. That's what killed him- or so I'm told... I've seen exactly two black widow spiders in my life, and they BOTH were in the trunk of a car. One was in the trunk of my car, the other was in the trunk of my girlfriend's car. They like dark places (So do brown recluses) so be careful before you throw on that coat that's been hanging up since last year, or those boots that have been in the back of the closet.

Out of 20 years of banging my boots before putting them on (learned that in the Army, and- no pun intended) I've only gotten one insect out of a shoe, and that was a cricket, if memory serves. I've heard of people finding scorpions... Usually by jamming their foot in there, and finding out the hard way.

the town i use to live in... had a case where a little girl was walking home from school and one (brown recluse) dropped out of a tree and landed on the back of her neck & bit her. she was sick for a few days then ended up passing away from it. poor thing was only 8yr.old.

I've always wanted to live in Colorado (Or Montana- don't ask me why).

Seems like a good reason to pack it up, and head north... At least we'd get some real winters, and hardly any tornadoes.

I've been bitten by a brown recluse with no adverse side effects. I guess I caught it in time since I went to the doctor almost right away. Won't see my mug on a google image search.

I see black widows on almost a daily basis at work. I work at Lowes and they love to make nests under pallets and others cool/shady areas. We also have brown widows and brown recluse's out there. I always wear gloves and look at everything that I'm going to be lifting.

Something bit me at my wife's family reunion in Shreveport, LA labor Day weekend, and left a lump the size of a dime on my right arm, near the elbow, for a solid 30 days. It got smaller and smaller, and (by the 35th day, or so) I couldn't feel it anymore... I probably should have gone to the doctor...

I never go to the doctor...

Yes, they suck. Brown recluses hide anywhere they want. Try looking in your gloves before you put them on.

I don't play around with poison, well, except for Ziegen Bock.

that map is not right. They have them in Florida too. My sister got bit by one and she caught it early before it got bad. When I used to work on roofs I used to see black widows all the time near the A/C units.
