A former employee of mine, and I had a brown recluse discussion a few years ago. I told him i push my sleeves inside out, from the outside, then visually check every pocket, crease, and crevice, before I put my jacket on.

he said he lays his on the floor, and with full weight, walk on over every square inch of it, with his heels, then turns it inside out and inspects it.

I guess when you grow up in the south, there are some things you get used to doing. So, for you northerners that move to Texas there are subtle things you need to know about. Just as a country bumpking like me, found out it's a good idea to carry an ice scrapper in your car, when I was back East for school, and an ice/snow storm hit. Didn't haev one, and had to wait nearly an hour for the Cavalier to melt a hole in the ice big enough to see out of, and drive.

Who knew Augusta, Georgia could get down to an icy 2 degrees?

Be prepared.

I HATE SPIDERS! I freak out if one gets anywhere near me or touches me. When I used to go camping in Florida there would be these huge banana spiders that would make a web from one tree to the other. I have gotten used to walking through woods with a large stick and waving it up and down to break any spider webs.

I find Black Widows at my house all of the time. They're all around the property, in the garage and everything. Any advice to get rid of them other than paying someone to spray?

Dude, when I was in Korea- I don't know what kind of spiders those were, but those sumbychez were big. Not Wolf Spider or Tarantula big, but they'd certainly pimp slap the brown recluse. Easily the size of a silver dollar (if not slightly larger) in full sprawl.

What's crazy about them was, they could build a web overnight, and the same spot you walked arcoss the previous day, now had a web, with them right in the middle of it, at face level. So, if you were walking between trees, two poles, or anything they could span with a web- you'd better have your eyes open, or risk having that much spider on your face.

I wish I'd taken a picture of them. I saw a bunch, but saw way more at Camp Hovey than I did at Camp Red Cloud.

Found a pic...

Not really doing it justice- but, trust me when I tell you, those suckers are big. You coudl darn near walk into the web (face first) before you see them. After that happens to you, you learn to keep your eyes open.

I found this on the virtual tourist website- it kinda echoes what I just told ya...

Internet rule #57 - There are some things you simply cannot "Unsee."

I'm suprised this thread got derailed onto spiders. There's so many bad ways this thread could have gone. Sadly I can give you a list of things to NOT google, but it'd only make you want to google them even though you know better than to do so.

Watch out! The Black Widow is more poisonous than the Recluse. I've heard people describe the symptoms as horrendous cramping pains in the abdomen and other body parts. This can last for days with other milder symptoms lasting for weeks. There is anti venom available but there is the possibility of a severe allergic reaction if you take it.

I'd move the hell out tonight. You don't want nothing to do with those bad *****!

Yea, those Banana Spiders are huge. I also hate the random spider webs that pop up overnight in the yard.

BTW, to go with the original topic, googling "pwned" can yield some funny results....as well not so funny ones

Do you guys remember that photo of the soldier holding those 2 afghanistan spiders. Now THOSE were scary...I'm not sure how true to life those photos were, but the ones I saw looked to be about the size of a medium sized dog. I heard they run at speeds around 30mph, screaming while they run. Probably one of my top fears now, thanks for the reminder.
