Hot Shot Delivery Question; Collect for Freight

Does anyone on here run a Hot Shot or Delivery Service? I'm curious about the paperwork you use when you pick something up as freight. A guy I bought some safes from said i didn't have to pay tax on them if a delivery service picked them up, but I would if I picked them up myself. So I'm sending a friend of mine to pick them up saying he is the delivery service. The guy told me the company picking them up needs to have a "collect for freight" form with a copy for him. What all does this form include? This is going to save me about 600 dollars minus the gas. I didn't think I'd have to pay tax since the store is out of state, but I do according to the owner unless the safes are shipped. Thanks in advance.

In my last job, we used a hot shot company for deliveries several times a day, every day of the week. Unfortunately they were shipping our company's stuff to one of our remote locations (oil field) so they never had any paperwork other than what we gave to them which was a "bill of lading". Which this may be what you need.
Sorry I can't be more help.

What was on the "bill of ladding"? Was it just a description of what was being shipped and where it is being shipped to?

Well, I did back in high school... I did a few of these... here's a tip, especially since I was technically not a "real" company like Fedex... but that doesn't really matter... either you or your friend make something up on the computer (the collect for freight form) saying that the shipping company (your friend's make-believe company), is going to pick up the following items: safes, and then put a spot for the customer and for the business to sign. Basically you want the customer (you) to sign, and then give the form to your friend, and he will bring it along with him when he arrives to essentially "collect" the freight from the business, and the business will then sign the forms. Make sure you print 2 copies, and make sure you sign both and the business signs both. One copy goes for the business and one copy is yours. When you friend comes to your house with the safes, he will then have the form for you signed and completed.

You might also want to put a date field on there too.

I might start up my little business again... but I'm not too sure if I want to get phone calls from people asking me if I can move their house away on one trip with my truck to California... -no, can't you read... I do SMALL deliveries and moving. - Yeah, technically I could, but you better be running your belonging through some Winzip or something before you put them on my truck... 'cause it ain't gonna fit in one load lady.

Naa, I had a thread going on here about my little moving/shipping business, and some of the stuff I did. I never really had a problem with people, and a lot of people paid me well for what I did. Never did I have a complaint.. but all good things must come to an end sometime... but luckily I got out of it quick enough, haha. I actually enjoyed doing it... I shipped a couple of boxes of stuff down to PA, and a few boxes to Albany and NYC... so I had a few semi-long hauls... but I enjoyed it, and that's why I'm thinking about getting my CDL now. I dunno, the world is so large, and there are so many things one can do...

But that's probably more than what you wanted to know... but hey... just thought I'd tell you.
