Switch to a F-250?

Ok guys I've always wanted an F-250. The main reason being right now is it has a front solid axle, something I would like to have offroad (I go offroad a fair amount). Plus, it's an amazing truck and it's a diesel. Right now I have an '05 F-150 Lariat 4x4 with a bunch of aftermarket stuff on it including a 6" Fabtech Lift. Now....for my question to you.......If you were able, would you get rid of the 150 and buy an '05 white fx4 250 with a chip, intake, and exhaust and then put a lift and tires on it? Or even an 03-04 and lift it and tires wheels, etc.? This idea has been haunting me for quite a while now. Thanks for your input guys ya'll are always helpful!

Have you seen the prices of Diesel lately? That turned me off really quick. Totally takes away from the advantage you get in mpg.

Can't you put a solid axle on an F150? I don't offroad, but I could swear I'd read it here.

Yeah it's been done before. I believe it was a guy that has a white Scab and 41's. I think he got his bumper custom made by Outback Offroad here in Chattanooga. I'm not really looking to go that route, but that is true about the diesel. Definitely a negative.

I went from an '04 F150 Screw to an '06 F250 Screw (both chipped with Edge controllers). The F250 is a lot rougher of a ride and honestly doesn't get THAT much better mileage on the backroads than my F150 did. And diesel is more expensive than gas out here in Northern Cali. We didn't lift either truck but I know lifting the 250 will be a hell of a lot cheaper than the F150 due to the straight axel.

It just really depends on personal preference. I personally think the F150 would do better offroad as it's smaller and lighter.

Yeah, the 150 has done great offroad so far, I'm just looking for a little more durability with the straight axle. I'll probably be getting a winch with it so getting stuck isn't that big of a problem.

I doubt the F-250 would flex a whole lot better either while off road, being that heavy of a truck it probably has some hefty springs. The new Dodge Power Wagons had electrical disconnecting sway bars and had decent flex without them, they had the Cummins available the first couple years they were out. Personally I think my F-150 is too bulky for much off roading anyway, let alone anything bigger.

I would trade straight up for a diesel, getting 7-8mpg while tugging my tractor around gets old with my F-150, and it gives it a decent workout. I could probably get a little car/pickup for milage to drive everyday with the difference in fuel burned.

No way in hell I'd ever recommend anyone buy a 2003-2004 Superduty with the 6.0 diesel...

haha! Just like I wouldn't recommend the 6.4l diesel right now. Ya never know what might pop up... maybe the majority of the engines will only last 100k... who knows.

Only the hands of time will tell.

I'd go for the 6.4. It's already proven itself to be more reliable than the new 6.7 Cummins. To the OP, unless you have a reason for an F-250, it *really* isn't worth it. Take it from a previous F-150 owner and current F-250 owner.

Well... true. I can't deny you of that point.

F250's are nice, but if you want something for offroad, get a Jeep.

Forget buying a completely new truck.

You want a SFA... If you don't know have the know how or skills, take your truck to an offroad shop and get it SAS'ed. It'd be a lot cheaper than dropping 20 grand on a truck.
