Sounds like an IP conflict.
Both are trying to use the same IP
Make sure all adapters are set to obtain IP automatically.
the go Start>Run
type cmd
hit OK
In that box type ipconfig
hit Enter

This will tell you the current IP of the computer.
Do that on both and make sure they are different.

If they are the same

type ipconfig /release
then type ipconfig /renew
hopefully the router should give them each their own different IP then if both computers are both set to obtain IP automatically.

Wouldn't using the Jedi mind trick be easier?!

Ohh boy.....

When you say neither will work, do you mean neither will access the internet or you can't share files between them or both?

With them both on can you see the other computer(s) on the network in the work group and get to them?

Also if you can find the old thread and post a link here in this one so I can see how we had to set it up.

type ipconfig /all at the c:\ prompt

Do this when it is working and then when they are not working and review the DNS entries.

Usually manually entering the DNS ip addresses clears up windows internet access problems.

With the computers not working working see if you can ping 4.2.2.2 from the C:\ ... You can use 4.2.2.2 as your DNS server. We use to do this on new PCs and it allowed us to download updates (especially virus updates) from the internet before giving it access to network drives. etc. (This was years ago, there are better ways to accomplish the same thing.)

I still use 4.2.2.2 as my secondary DNS just in case my ISP has an issue with there DNS Server (like AT&T had last week)...

Do you have your SSID named? Is it brodcasted or not?

can you see the SSId on your laptop?

OS=Operating System. XP, W2000, Vista, Mac?

If you don't know what an OS is, I may not be able to help you.

Argh

Ok you are using XP....

Can you get in the Router from a lan connected PC? type 192.168.1.1 your default password is "admin" unless you changed it.

Once in there, I recommend you change your SSID to "whateveryouwanttocallit" then set it not to broadcast. Save changes

Then on the wifi laptop, open your connections and refresh. or ADD A NEW CONNECTION with the name you called it.
You should also encrypt the connection and make sure you know what it is.

Do you follow that? Does that make sense to you at all?

If not, call tech support.

My bill rate is 285 per hour.

I'm his assistant and my rate is 150 per hour, just thought I'd let you know so you don't get any hidden charges.

My comps were doing the same thing, but I really can't remember what I did to fix them.

I take 50% of your earnings as my "assistant" just an FYI.

Honestly, you need to unplug the wifi router and the DSL router. Then shut down all the pc's. Then wait a few min, plug the modem back in and wait until it is connected......then plug in the wifi router, wait until that is connected then turn on the pc's and make sure they are working (Via the lan)

then boot up the wifi notebook. See if it connects. Since I don't know your environment and how you are using your router, its hard for me to look over your shoulder and walk you through this.

Net is, there are many factors. Could be a firmware issue, IP conflict (most probable) Need for a release/renew issue....Mars not aligned with Jupiter.

I need to up my rates then. You think it might be the router itself, not the aforementioned stuff?
