whys my dog eat its own crap??

I got this new dog about 5 weeks ago, its a Yorkie Terrier that is 4 months old now. Its a good dog, but I think its to good, I mean it cleans up after itself when it takes a crap, by that, I mean that she eats her own crap! Not once, but all the time she does it! Its like she looks forward to going outside and taking a cap so she can eat it!

Why the heck does this dog do that? Its sick! Worst part is when I'm laying on the couch sleeping sometimes and she starts licking my face and mouth!

I don't get it, could it be that tasteful or something?

Maybe he's Al Gore's dog. He's really into the green recycling movement.

The only way to know how tasteful it is..... well you have to taste it. Then you can rule that out. Process of elimination.

On a serious note, there are many theories. It's not uncommon and it's not just your dog. It's not just dogs many animals do this. Many dogs also seem to like cat crap A LOT too.
It could be for additional protein or vitamins that they are lacking.
Try adding some protein to your dogs diet and see if it stops. However it could have developed a taste for it too and may continue to devour it's feces out of habit.

Hey our dog does the same thing and we have been fighting it for a long time. We have tried all sorts of stuff from the pet store but have not had any success. These days we just pick up his poop before he gets to nibble on it.They say it is a possible defiency in his diet but no one can say what.It also comes and goes as he doesn't always do it.Good Luck.

Yeah, when I thought about getting me a dog to help pick up the ladies, a Yorkie Terrier was the first dog that came to mind.

Dogs can be "trained" to eat their own crap by poor housetraining. When people rub their noses in it, dogs can and often do get the impression that you want them to eat their turds. That could be one reason, another already mentioned is the diet.

My suggestion is to use a good dog food, remember to switch slowly. Secondly, go out with the dog. Stand right next to it when its dumping, and when it turns around to eat it, correct him or her. Use the Dog Wisperer method, I think it works best. Make a noise that the dog doesn't like (chhhht or something like that) and use your hand like a mouth and gently "bite" the dog on the shoulder.

Let's see... Mattineer is falling asleep in the same room as a crap eating dog. Does anyone else see the danger here?

I was never a fan of that method anyway, I noticed it was a severely in effective method, never thought about them perceiving it as that though. Now I simply don't like it at all.
I've always used catch them in the act then scald them right then and put them outside. If I happen to just find the evidence, then I just clean it up and watch closer.

Considering its owner it might be trying to kill itself.

Does it chase cars or chew on your melted Christmas cords?
