Need Some Roofing Expertise
I still say, if you don't want to buy a ladder, the best thing is rent a Skyjack....

You just lift yourself up and drive it where you want/need to go.

I mentioned it as 24 foot ladders seem to be more common than 30 foot.
and cheaper too if you have to buy.
Either way, a ladder is your answer.
That roof ain't for human access.

Thanks guys. Those are all some really fine (and some humorous) ideas
I work for a Telecom/Internet company and we have a wireless division that climbs towers all the time. I spoke with their lead tower guy and he hooked me up with a harness and a good 1/2" rope. I tied off on a tree in the backyard, slung the rope over the peak of the roof and into the front yard.
It took me a little while to get comfortable with the mechanism that actual holds onto the rope, but once I figured it out, climbing around on the roof isn't so bad at all! Kinda like rappelling, without all the good scenery.
Too bad I spent so much time getting comfortable with the harness and all, cuz I ran out of time tonight to finish up the lights and the weather is supposed to set in tomorrow evening. So, tomorrow by 3pm is the deadline I'm setting to get this project done.
I'll get some pictures of the finished project and maybe even some "action" shots if I can talk a family member into it.
