surround sound?

hey guru's, when we moved i just yanked all the wires out from the system and i think i have all hooked up. It is an onkyo reciever with a powered sub (pardign) and front epi's with small bookshelf type sony speakers for the rear. also have a center channel. when playing a dvd like top gun the sound is awesome....when watching tv the sound isn't as strong thru the rear speakers. is there anything you can think of to look for? i have set all the distances on the reciever and when testing the individual speakers they all come thru very strong. I have the tv speakers off, and wasn't sure if the surround sound option on the tv actually matters at this point...also do i use fixed or variable in the feild on the tv. i use an iptical cable for the dvd and s cable.....the others are all just regular cables. i have 3 inputs etc....thanks....(the only other thing different is i now use a different cable company with digital box). thanks.....

jim

Most TV shows are not broadcast in surround sound.
If you get audio from the rears from a non surround source, then you either have a short or your reciver is processing by frequencies not signal.

You need a Bose Lifestyle 48 system.

It's only 4 grand... but I am positive that it will make you have a "real" home theater. Oh, and I personally like the Black... the white just looks too tacky.

EPIs? Cool. I used to work there. No highs, no lows, it must be Bose.

I almost said the same thing.......

Bose does make great speaker boxes with alot of engineering put in to them.
Take the speakers out, put in atleast a decent speaker, and hook it up to a cheap quality processor and you'd have a good sound, better than stock bose anyway. But you still paid 4 times more than a great system and you only got a good sound.

i have the T/E 70 series (time energy). the sound is really awesome. had the woofers rebuilt by a local guy that gets sent rebuilds from all over the country (world?). anyway, the clarity of sound with them and the paradign sub works well. for some reason i thought i would have more shows in surround sound also? just watched spidey 3 and transformers and the sound rocked!

Did Human speakers do your rebuild? He is the best at EPI rebuilds. The T/E series were awesome. Too bad Harman killed off the brand. It was a fun company to work at.

Tell me what the initials are on the inspection stickers on the back. Just curious who did final on them.

Yellow sticker is serial number. Inspection sticker is usually top right or top left corner. It may have fallen off.

As PSS-Mag said, almost everything broadcast is only 2-channel. What model Onkyo recevier do you have? Some brands have some decent 5-channel processing, so you may want you try out the surround modes (only for the TV, keep DVD's 5.1). My Denon has two surrpond modes that work pretty well for 2-channel audio, including CD's. Dolby Prologic II works pretty well, from what I hear. That came out one year after I got my recevier, so I don't have experience with it.

If you have an HDTV tuner, much of that programming is 5.1 and some HBO/Cinimax/Shotime movies are as well, but you need a receiver capable of outputting digital audio too.

i don't have the model handy right now, however, it does have alot of different sound feilds to play with. neo 6 and pro logicII and a bunch of others...got it last year as a leftover. only have it hooked as a 5.1 but can be a 7.1 if i deside. the epi's tag is there for the inspection but no initials can be made out....they have been around for 25 years or so...can't believe the sound. really glad as a young man i was smart enough to get something so good back then that withstands the test of time!
