I kind of read into it that you discovered the break-in sometime between 1am and when you would have normally left for work.
If you didn't discover it until after you would have gone to work then, you were lucky to be on vacation.

One thing I did learn from this thread is "Man Door", I'd never heard that term before.
Next time my wife tries to follow me thru the 'man door' I'm going to stop her and say,
"Hun, let me open the big one for you."
"Man door" must be a Canadian thing.

I didn't notice the damage on the door until yesterday afternoon, if I did have to go to work they would have cleaned me out. They could have been in front of my house, waiting for me to leave. When I didn't they wrote it off and left. It's disturbing to think that somebody was watching me, maybe for weeks, to get my routine down. The good thing about this is they showed me where the weaknesses are on my property. The rest of the vacation is going to go into securing all that.

No typo... It's a standard door in the garage that goes outside. An alternative to the standard garage doors that open for vehicles, etc.

But you CANNOT set booby traps to catch someone since you are then protecting the property and not yourself. (I think there is a gray area if you are home at the time that the booby trap goes off).

We just talked about this last week in my legal class, which is taught by a practicing lawyer (as compared to a full time professor).

Just thought I'd share... the thought of someone stealing my stuff infuriates me, so I feel for you. I agree that you should sit and wait for them to come back... if you are in the garage when they come in it is self defense. It wouldn't be your fault that you "just got back from hunting and were working on your truck with your loaded rifle sitting nearby".

EDIT: just noticed the original author was from Canada... not sure how the law works up there...

Come to Texas, you can protect your posessions w/ deadly force too. If they broke in, they can be shot.......

I got a 'man door' on my garage
That and the main overhead door. What the heck else would you call it...a woman door?

Sucks to here about your garage, mine got broke into once in my last place, I had a security system installed the next morning, they weren't too smart though, they somehow lifted the overhead door up enough to get a jack-all under it and then proceeded to smash the door up into my cieling as the opener wouldn't let it open normally, they got the door open far enough to slide under it, crawled over my brand new 18" wheels for my stang and got my mig welder, a floor jack and some motocross gear. They must have gotten scared off somehow, they left me a nice new jack-all in trade.

We've got 2 video cameras in each of our garages with a DVR to record 30 days worth of footage... along with 2 standby APC 600VA UPS' on each system to backup the power in the event of a power interuption.

During the summer months our garages stay open from around 4 am to around midnight... and sometimes we are not there so and John, ****, or Harry could walk in and take some nice tools... especially our new Matco set.

It's a detached garage, and yeah it's 2x4 framing. That's why my buddy is making a bracket to reinforce the jamb around the striker plates to tie it into the framework of the garage. He's making another to reinforce the edge of the door around the locks. This bracket will wrap from the outside around to the inside and then get through bolted to tie both sides of the steel together. I reinforced the hinges years ago by driving 3" screws into the door and the jamb. The hinge side held solid, if the door hadn't split on the lock side they wouldn't have gotten in.

BTW does it really matter what I call the door? I think we all know what I'm talking about.

I dont know how you guys do it up there. But down here, we shoot first, and ask questions later. See Americans, are NOT afraid to do whatever we have to do to protect those closest to us. I would kill someone in a heart beat, if they broke into my home. I didnt buy my guns to just look at them!

That goes without saying, no dangerous person who breaks into my home will get near my wife or daughter without at least a few 'unregistered' 30 cal size holes in him. My point however is that with all the past liberal govt's here, the criminal has more rights than I do in my own home and there would be serious legal consequences for me if I layed him out dead. It sucks the big one but its the way it is here and in Tbird's situation. Just sayin'.

BTW, 'door' works just fine unless one needs to describe which one is being referenced.

I've heard it called small door, even a service door, side door (if it's on the side) or just "the door" (there is ussually only one "man door" so using singular reduces teh options.
I've never heard it called a man door.

Hey Bob, my man door is unlocked, just go on in and help yourself!
