Pics of the artwork I put in my railings...

As some of you know, I spent all last year building a house. It took me from April '06-April '07 to build the majority of the house, and we are still wrapping up some loose ends, but I thought I'd share a few pictures of the main level of the house. I had to do some Alaskana in the house, so I had iron art work panels installed inside of western red cedar railings. Here are the panels...

Caribou over the banaster to the basement...

Moose on the catwalk, visible from the front entry...

Dall Sheep on the staircase to the top floor of the house...

Grizzly Bear on the opposite side of the catwalk from the moose. This is the living room side...

Nice. Don't let any little ones get snagged up in the artwork.

Here are a few more shots of the main level of the house. I don't have any of the upstairs yet.

Kitchen:

Induction cook top and cook sink:

Views from the dining room:

Our pantry door should be in next week, which is a good thing because our two year old is getting into stuff she shouldn't be. We had black galaxy granite countertops and we still have to complete the window sill. We are still moving in so everything hasn't been put away yet and messes accumulate quickly. Sorry for the junk in the pictures. There are also 20 recessed lights in the kitchen and another light in the pantry.

We were real concerned about that and thought about not doing it because of it. The artwork follows the 4" code, and after 6 months in the house, we haven't had any problems. The kids hang out up there and look down on the living room and kitchen all the time, and they find more interest in sticking their hands and feet through the 2X2's. There are a couple of sharp ends on some of the panels, especially on the edges of the mountains, but it is thick stuff and would be difficult to do any damage.

Now for a few messy room pictures..

Dining room. Yes, that wall is as bright red as my truck. We are flying down to Anchorage on Friday to look for a dining room table.

Living room/entertainment center/kid acting goofy/too many kids toys. I had the idea from the get go to have a recessed entertainment center. It worked out to where a 60" tv fit perfectly in there with a little room to get behind it. We went with a Sony SXRD HDTV and the clarity is incredible. The elk is finally on the wall, and you can see we still have yet to do the window sill, and tile underneath the tv.

Front entry through to the living room. We had a green couch from our condo, so that is what is going in the living room for a while. It didn't clash with the red as bad as we thought, we were worried we were going to look a little too festive. My brother framed in a mantle for me and we have a guy coming to finish tiling the fireplace later this week.

That's good. It's hard gauge the depth of the material with a 2D picture.

I really like your setup. Warm and inviting, something well needed in Alaska.

I'm pretty sure they were cut with a plasma cutter.

The house stays very warm, all three levels are concrete and have an R50 rating. We ended up with a 5 star plus energy rating. I had planned to add a little more insulation in the attic this summer but didn't get to it, we are around R40 up there, but I'd like to be around R60.

Thanks for the compliments.

Thanks Thumper. The house is classified as a 6 bedroom, one of which is an office though. There are three on the top floor, two kids rooms and our bedroom. The office is on the main level and there are two guest bedrooms in the basement that I'm working on. I have one sheetrocked and have to finish the other.

There are 2 regular bathrooms, one in the basement and one between the kids bedrooms, then a half bath next to the office. In our master bedroom we have a giant bathroom with a 150 gallon jacuzzi, toilet/bidet, double walk in shower and an 8 foot vanity with clear glass vessel sinks sitting on top of a limestone countertop. The entire floor, trim and tub surround are tiles with travertine 18X18" tiles. I'll work on getting some of those pictures as well.

Square footage of the master bedroom/bathroom/closet area is 1450 square feet. Total square footage of the house is around 6700 square feet.

Here is a picture of the master bedroom area right after the gypcrete was poured...

Here are a few outside shots from construction. We recently had the lawn and gutters installed and I have since painted the brown wood on the front deck white to match the trim and soffets...
