I need lawn help!! Its two tone brown!!

Some of you know that I bought a new house this summer (July). Just before I moved in the builders laid the front and back yard with sod. Since when we started to move in the grass was starting to go brown. Now since its been such a dry summer I have dead patchs all over my back lawn. Some dead sod strips too. I've watered it and raked the dead patch and put some grass seed down.

How do I go about making my lawn look green again?? Any tips or tricks will be welcome.

This is what the lawn looked like before I moved in.

Lots of water. A fertilizer of some sort wouldn't hurt. 13-13-13 is good all-purpose fertilizer.

Established lawns need about 1" of water per week on average... If it's really hot out, it probably needs more!

Freshly laid sod needs to be kept wet until the roots 'bite' into the top soil.... So, you would need to water every day for a couple of weeks at least!

That's a whole lotta lawn there, and looks pretty good in the pic.... Do you have an underground sprinkler setup?

What's been your watering routine?

IMO, you gotta water every day until it gets green again...

Good luck!

Mitch

Use starter fertilizers so as not to burn the grass. And as mentioned water, water, water. Water in the morning never at night. Watering late in the evening leaves the grass moist when the sun sets, leaving your lawn prone to fungus. Much better to water in the AM right before sunrise. Watering during daylight hours can cause you to loose between 10-30% of your water to evaporation before it even makes it to the lawn. So watering right before day light lets every gallon of water possibly actually hit the lawn and gets it ready for a hot day in the sun

Its pouring out right now. Its been raining since last night. I just took the dog out earlier and the grass is soaked well.

I will buy some fertizer tomorrow at Home Depot. They have a large garden centre there.

I see that you have a dog. Anywhere the dog takes a wizz is going to die. If you can, water that spot down well when he/she/it is done.

Ammonium Sulfate and water = green grass in a couple of days! This stuff is amazing, make sure you get it spread evenly because if you don't you will be able to see the darker green spots that got the most fertilizer! Also make sure to water it in well or it will leave burned spots.

A good all around fertilizer is recommended to keep your lawn green throughout the season but to jump start lush growth and green it up quickly, nothing beats Ammonium Sulfate.
