Those of you running vista, check your journals and look at the errors.

My qualifications? I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night.
I have developed applications from the ground up. Concept, to whiteboarding to pseudo-code to full blown VB coding, testing and distribution. I understand that software causes many problems. However, I believe you are essentially saying hardware plays a minor role in system stability. That is just plain wrong. An OS can compensate for poorly written software much easier than it can for poorly designed hardware.

Is Vista rock solid, perfect? Of course not.

However, It is a good O/S. I have a system I dual boot between Vista Ultimate and XP Pro. Vista has never once given me a problem and performs faster than XP on the same hardware.

Oh and BTW you dont have to be wrong for the other person to be right. You both are right to some extent. But D is FAR from a techie, he's just to modest to slap the resume down for all the see.

Hard to predict? You mean like turning it on?

Just kidding. Sorry you guys think I am crazy or slamming Vista..I too am running in dual boot at home. I really like some of the features and the look and feel. From day one it had issues but with the barage of patches sent from MS it has gotten WAY better...

It will take time for Vista to be truly stable...until then I back up daily.

I write software and occasionally there are bugs. However, more times then not they are not true bugs, but exceptions to business rules that were not thought of or explained by the end user.

That was more of a general statement directed at software in general, and not this debate.

That's the first time I've been called that 'round these parts.

Anywho... RR you obviously didn't get the sarcasm... that's what the owl was for. But I did enjoy the wikipedia cut-and-paste.

Yeah sorry I didn't get the sarcasm, I was *** deep in alligators at the time.

Next time provide a sarcasm disclaimer so I can pick up on it.

The point of the cut and paste was to point out the background of NT...wikipedia was the first one I saw.

My ewang only fits on 21" monitors.

... as for the quoted statement. I did not at any point say upgrade to Vista. He is buying a NEW PC. In my first post, I said if you're buying new, get Vista. Period. Doesn't matter what version. If he said "I have a 5 year old PC and want to go to Vista" I'd have said he's nuts and stick to what he's got.

So, so sum up:

Upgrade XP to Vista on same PC = Bad

Dumping $$ into current PC to upgrade to Vista = Bad

Buying new PC and choosing XP = Bad

Buying a cheap POS new PC and wanting to run Vista w/ Areo = Bad

Buying a nice new PC and choosing Vista = Good

If "advancements" means building a new box, installing a new OS, and then realizing it's not as functional as the old box with old OS, then yes I'm having difficulty with how Microsoft defines things.

I'm more than familiar with the hardware and software circle of life, and have dealt with it on a user basis since back when we used dip switches to assign resources. I'm also more than aware that without good hardware no OS is going to work well.

Neither of the above changes the fact that they have dumbed down functionality items that are within the realm of the average user. If hardware and software stability always existed, myself and many others would have much less concern about things like a good backup system.

Wow, that was an interesting read....and now I have witnessed a "Virtual Geek Fight." Anyways, I'm in the market for a new laptop and have been doing my homework on which operating system to use. I'm leaning more to XP and than upgrade later to Vista.

This stuff is way past me, but I just got a brand new HP Compaq6715b handed to me free of charge. (long story) It's running XP Pro, should I trade it on a MacBook Pro, or hang onto it and install Vista? I've been using Macs for 20 years, this Brand X stuff is a pain to figure out.

ducking as I step away from the computer....

Remember that crap with Arcnet and the old 1200 bps modems.

Man I just loved walking a 60 year old woman through installing a 1200bps modem into her 286 and then setting up and starting aterm (pcanywhere predecessor) and then getting her to NOT answer the phone when it rang.

"No ma'am, CD backslash...no the other one....high on the left low on the right"

"yes ma'am, F3, no not F then 3, F3, top row of your keyboard, 4th key, yes that is right"

"Now don't answer your phone when it rings"

RING RING RING

(through my modem's speaker)

"Hello? Hello? Country bumpkin fuel....can I help you"

it was at this point that I would just get in and drive to NJ to fix it.
