Where not to get laptop and computer suggestions

HERE This is a Ford truck enthusiast website not a computer website.

Go to a website like hardocp.com, notebookreview.com, anandtech.com, arstechnica.com, the list goes on and on. So get the right information from the places and people that deal with this stuff. I came here way back when I needed information on my truck so I left my Computer website for f150online.

I'm not trying to bash on anyone or troll but it seems like every 15th post is computer related and the information being fed to those people is like something a Compusa employee might feed a old lady. Anyways

Too bad most people only know about as much as a CompUSA employee. I know hardware/software of both PC and Mac like the back of my hand. I just never chip in and give advice.

I don't mind people asking. I know so much about everything. But, I keep it to myself. If I shared all I knew, then I wouldn't be so special would I. Hell, I know if I stay quiet either Kobi or PSS-Mag will take care of them.

Good grief! Who better to ask than people using computers? Besides, we have lots of pretty astute computer geeks on here. Well, at least some that think they are. This thread should go far!

Get bent. This is called general discussion, deal with it. There are plenty of IT professionals on these forums

Just because they know the basic computer fundamentals doesn't mean that they can/should give advice, much less let the computer-based environment of this forum paint the ruse that this is a good place to get advice!

That's akin to asking a pack of pubescent seniors in a high school marching band to help you choose a good synthetic oil to use for a high-milage truck engine. Sure, most of them drive cars, and some even trucks. But I wouldn't trust that advice farther than I cold throw one of their tubas.

I don't mean to get down on you. Honestly. I just think that in a truck forum, you talk about everything regarding trucks.

And yes, for the gum shoes out there who might now call me a hippocrit, I did post in a computer-advice thread today. The purpose of that was to steer someone away from a brand; no technical advice was given.

So, since we're on the subject of computers...

Anyone tell me a good place to get a bluetooth internal for our Gateway laptop? or an internal wireless card for my Dell laptop?

I think the general public using any product is a good source of info as to what works, what doesn't. It is one more source of info that can help make an informed choice. I have learned a lot on these forums about a lot of stuff other than Ford trucks.

And as to the band kids, there are a few youngun's on here that have as much knowledge as anyone else when it comes to their vehicles and some of them played in the band. Whats the kids name that is now in the Air Force, he comes to mind right away. He can tell you anything you want to know about a Bronco or a 70s model truck. Just don't ask CrAz3d anything unless it is about band instruments or crazy females. What about Josiah, Thumper, Lumadar, they come to mind as good information sources.

This is fun!

If you've had good experiences with Dell, great.

My experiece with them has been [B]nothing[B] besides a let-down and complete disaster. My two friends who had Dell *laptops* had them either break, and had to wait for months (seriously) to get the problem figured out (working with Dell the entire time, mind you) and the other was so fed up with the poor service from Dell and poor computer quality, that she sent back the *laptop* (didn't get any refund whatsoever, just outside of 90 days) and got a Mac. My mom has a Dell *laptop* and I have had to spend numerous hours on the phone with tech service (read: a guy in India) to keep her comp working. And I havn't even told you about my girlfriends *laptop*. I'm not making this up.

It is because of this litany of horrible experiences that I gave that advice. And that is what it is, opinionated advice (granted, heavily opinionated...).

See, right there is an example of why people ask on here. You tell me that, and I factor it into the other info i gather and it helps me make a decision.

I admin a computer forum - you ought to see the threads in my General Discussion forum - quite a few on cars and trucks. We don't bitch about them. We have quite a few members that are professional mechanics/technicians.

Let me qualify my remarks.
Firstly, my purpose was not to give offense in any manner. I apologize to anyone who has had a mutually beneficial relationship with Dell.

I agree with you bluejay. In this general aspect of experiences, etc., asking those about their computers is a good thing to do. However, I still maintain that specific technical advice is not for a place such as this. That is all.
