Computer RAM HELP

I have a HP Pavillion 514n i need to get some ram into. On the net it shows its DDR 233mhz, if i put in 1GB of 400MHz PC-2700 ram will that work?

It should just downclock right? Won't screw anything up?

PC2100 DDR SDRAM is what you need. The ram wont fall back to a lower speed you have to buy the correct ram or it wont boot.It also only holds 1 gig in 2 chips 266 or 200 mhz ram is supported.

You'd be wasting your money, but the PC-2700 should work fine.

Ram that is better, but of the same type *should* work. computers are quirky sometimes, but in theory it should work.

I disagree. I have done it several times before. When you mix 2 different chips, the RAM will run at the speed of the lesser chip. Of course this is assuming that both are the same type, which will be quite obvious, because if they are not the same type, the incorrect type will not fit in the slot.

***disclaimer***
Some mobo's may prefer that you put the slower speed chip in the first slot

This must be the "CompUSA advice" thread. Anyway, if you're running DDR, and you put in a faster chip than what you currently have, almost ALL memory chips are backwards compatible all the way down to PC2100 (266mhz). So, yes, most likely it will "downclock" to use your term. I would check with the hardware vendor just to be 100% sure though.

He is not working with a powerful machine so why point him to ram that will cost more and will not show him a better result? It will only support 1 gig in 2 chips and run at 266mhz so why waste the money on 2700 ram?Compusa thread?OP did not know about ram so why dump a bunch of info he wont need?If he is going to spend money on ram there is no reason to waste money on 2700 when the PC wont run over 266.All DDR ram is backwards compatible that is how it was designed. So 3200 will work in a 2100 but the front side bus will only be that of 2100 due to the limits of the cpu.

I would recommend you buy the exact match ram from Crucial.com - it's guaranteed compatible.

Just because he would be wasting his money (which I already said) is no reason to give him false advise and tell him that it won't boot with the faster RAM. How do you know he doesn't have a gig of PC2700 laying around, or a friend with some spare RAM?

Well the 1GB PC 2700 didn't work.

There was 256mb in the slot that said B. So i put the 1 GB in the A slot...it started but didn't get to the XP loading screen.

So i tried the 1GB alone and i got bios beeps....1 then 3 together then three together then another 1. So i moved the ram to another slot...same thing.

So i'm just gonna get the proper stuff:
Kingston ValueRAM 512MB PC2100 DDR

That should work! It's for a customer of mine.

Go to http://www.crucial.com/ and click on the "Scan my system" link. It will tell you exactly what you have, what you need, etc.
