Meteor Shower

Hey all, if anybody is interested, there is going to be a meteor shower next week-end. Aug 12/13. Sunday night, Monday morning. Go to a dark location, set up a lounge chair, face North-North East, and enjoy Nature. It will get more intense as the night progresses, but most activity should happen between 1 and 5 in the morning. They're calling for about a hundred an hour. You should also be able to see a more than usual amount of shooting stars for about a week before and after the peak. Hope you have a good show, Peace, Dave.

Ahhhh, the Leonid meteor shower..

It's usually the best of the year, I believe there will be no moon this year to wash it out..

Always a good show!!

Hey Tex, it's the Perseids shower this month, the Leonids are in November. Also a good show. You're right, there will be no moon to contend with this year, now here's hoping the weather co-operate. Peace, Dave.

I'll try to remember that, I've never seen a meteor shower.

No sir, you have them reversed.. The Leonids are in August - the majority of the meteors appear to originate from the vicinity of the constellation Leo - hence the name. And August is in the zodiac sign of Leo.

The Perseids shower is in November, and sometimes it's even better quality-wise than the Leonids. Maybe because of the cooler, drier air? Not as many per hour, but I've seen the biggest, most colorful during the Perseids..

Rock on. Does location matter like with eclipses, or will all locations be able to get a good show?

Nope, anywhere on the planet that's dark gets a good show.

If you can get away from any city lights, lay back on a sleeping bag in the bed and just look straight up you'll see pretty lights in the sky. Sometimes a nice one will show colors, red, green, gold..

Hope I get to see it. Our 'rainy season' is beginning to clear up a little.

Hey all, if you want a pretty good explanation of the mechanics of it all, go to http://science.nasa.gov/Astronomy.htm, and click on Great Perseids. I've had a couple beers tonight, so I'm not even gonna try and explain it! Enjoy. Peace, Dave.

Don't forget!

I am watching it now. (00:30) Already saw one, not a lot of activity yet.
From where I am at, about 40 degrees angle right next to the big dipper on the right.

Tomorrow night, you can see the shower at best.
