Get ready for . . .

A barrage of "Special Reports" on news stations nationwide . . .

"Is your Bridge Safe?!?!?!?!"

The networks will have one to two hour specials "America's Bridges, Disasters Looking To Happen"

Total fear mongering in the name of ratings, people panicking, citizens calling for Special Committees, Congress and the Senate hamming it up, calls for improving the infrastructure of the U.S.

THE SKY IS FALLING!!!!!

Maryland is holding a press conference at 1:30 to say our bridges are safe.

Gee that helps.

I just had a lady from the local Fox TV station call me for an interview to put on the tv tonight! I told her that I am not a structural engineer and pointed her to the ehad of our structures group.

I am a civil engineer and manage projects with bridges on them. I am not an expert when it comes to bridges.

I did see that the bridge that collapsed had a sufficiency rating of 4 our of 10 back in 2005. It was rated "structurally deficient", which is not uncommon. the problem with that bridge is that there were no redundant systems to prevent total failure if one structural element failed.

When people say "they don't build them like they used to', I tell them "Thank God". Not everything built back in the 50's and 60's was built well. We have come a long way in the engineering and construction world.

The main problem is the almighty $. States keep getting cut more and more.

I wouldn't mind if the peace bridge was found to be unstable and torn down. Keep those Canadians on the other side of Lake Erie!

And I'll be sucked into watching them only because as an engineer I'm into shows that deal with the nation's infrastructure and engineering marvels/disasters.

Just wait till they figure out how many cars are under the bridge in the river! That's what I'm waiting to hear. Or if they get into a big debate about it. Some city officials are asking that we just let the bridge sink into the river and not pull it or the cars out since we know everyone down there is dead.

I can't imagine them trying to justify not doing the work to pull the cars and bodies out, just to save money and thus preventing families from burying their dead.

Because something breaks... DUH!

We have been ranked as having the worst bridges in the united states for years, yet I aint skeered. I cross atleast 5 everyday, and countless overpasses.

Yet it will be twisted into an "eye opener" and we will suddenly need to quadruple our taxes to come up with the eleventy kabillion dollars to come up with a plan to get them up to par. Then another tax hike in 5 years to implement the 50 year plan. Only to find that in 50 years the first ones are shot.
