June auto sales numbers

General Motors Corp. (GM) said June sales decreased 21.3% from a year ago amid weaker retail sales, which the company attributed to a soft industry environment and lower incentive spending compared with its rivals. The company also blamed the planned reduction in its daily rental sales, which fell 22% in June.

GM's sales of cars and light trucks stood at 320,668 in June, down from 407, 513 a year earlier. Sales of light trucks fell 22.8% to 182,317, while car sales fell 19.3% to 138,351.

Toyota Motor Corp. (TM) said June sales of cars and trucks in the U.S. jumped 10.2% amid strong sales of its Prius hybrid car and Tundra pickup truck.

The Japanese auto maker said it sold 245,739 vehicles in June, compared with 223,018 a year ago, slipping back behind Ford Motor Corp. (F) in monthly sales.Ford, which has been slashing fleet sales, sold 247,599 cars and trucks in June. Toyota topped Ford in sales last month and in January this year.

Toyota division sales for June rose 11% to 216,870. Lexus division sales rose 4.3% to 28,869. Sales of the Tundra pickup more than doubled to 21,727 from 8, 822, while sales of the Prius hybrid surged 83% to 17,756.
Ford reported an 8.1% drop in June cars and trucks sales. Ford said it sold 247,599 cars and trucks in June, compared with 269,404 a year earlier. The Dearborn, Mich., company's car sales were down 24.6%, while sales of trucks - representing Ford's most profitable business - were up 2.9%. Sales of Ford's F- Series trucks were essentially flat from a year ago, while sales of crossovers such as the Ford Edge and Lincoln MKX rose 83% from a year ago, the company said.
DaimlerChrysler AG's (DCX) Chrysler Group posted a 1.4% fall in U.S. sales for June as larger vehicles continued to be a tough sell for Americans reeling from high gasoline prices.

good to see Fords truck line is selling about the same as last year.. and gm has dropped... even with there new improved POS

and I like this one:

Toyota, which relies on incentives to spur demand for the Tundra, is offering 0% financing, or up to $3,500 cash back, on all models of the trucks between June 15 and July 31. A company spokesman said in mid-June that a 5.5% downturn in the overall U.S. pickup-truck market led to the decision to offer the deep discounts.

hmmm... 5.5% downturn in overall US pickup market... but ford stayed at about the same sales....

Don't let official incentive numbers fool you, because when we went to a Ford and Toyota dealership last weekend for a new truck for my brother, the incentives were huge for the F150 (Ford + Dealer Combined).

The most we could get off the Tundra was $3,500, while we were getting $8,500+ off the F150. As you can guess, he bought a FX4 Screw (like mine ).

fact is that toyota having to give any incentive at all on there new "wonder truck" and sales so far below ford... well the numbers speak for themselfs. Ford has been giving discounts forever.. so it is about normal.

oh and congrats to your brother.. he got the better truck

I haven't been in a Tundra, so I can't talk about the interior or handling...so I guess I can only rely on numbers posted online/in magazines
if you count truck performance in terms of 0 to 60 times. last i checked the ford still is rated to haul more and can tow more than the toyota. thats what trucks are built for and the dated ford is still getting it done

Not to mention that at least by buying the Ford you are investing in America, instead of investing in a foreign company.
No matter how great the Tundra is, I could never brag about owning a Toyota. Where Im from, if you're the guy who drives an import, chances are you are going home alone.
In defense of GM, if you take away the 22% drop in rental sales they would be +1% for the month.

Personally I think my brother made a mistake. Not because he bought the Ford, but because he bought an outgoing model.

He should have waited another year when the 09' new model comes out. Completely redesigned with better engines and 6-speed automatic.

Oh well, youth, what do you expect?

As for the Toyota, that thing is a freakin beast. Makes the Hemi Ram feel slow, very solid feel as well. The thing is seriously EXPENSIVE compared to the F150 just based on MSRP, and compound in the low incentives and it was just too much $$$. The new Silverado was cool, but my brother won't buy a Chevy.

umm i believe it says:

"Sales of the Tundra pickup more than doubled to 21,727 from 8, 822"

that seems like an increase to me. although i am not sure. i like to use Al Gores "fuzzy math"

Don't confuse the issue with facts.

Thats one way to look at it, or you could look at it as the Ford being a proven design. At least with the current model F-150 its a solid, proven, reliable performer. If he has went with an '09 there would be the concern of dealing with all the first-year bugs. It normally takes the manufacturers are year or 2 to work all the bugs out of new models.
About the Tundra, yeah, its a beast, but is overpriced and me personally, I could never take pride in driving an import.
My '99 F-150 might not me much, but I get women checking me out a lot when Im in my truck and thats a reaction I never got when I drove a Toyota. Granted, I didnt buy my truck just because I wanted to pick up chicks, but its a definete plus that women love my truck.
