Here's a big ol F U to you Rick Hendrick.

Rick is one of the nicest guys in the garage, and didn't say anything different than any other owner would have said. Hell .. DEI claimed that the brackets on Jr's wing were an unintentional mistakeand they shouldn't be punished.
What is getting lost in all this for most people is that the car fit all the templates perfectly .. it isn't like they used an unapproved part, or had trick shocks to get the car lower, or used a fuel additive... they just messed with the body between the template points .. it is a very common practice, and every team does it for every car in every race for the current cars.
BUT .. it is also one of the intentions of the COT program .. to prevent that from happening due to build costs, R&D costs, etc..
I do believe that Nascar will make it perfectly obvious that they do not want the same kind of body massaging occurring with the COT ..
I also think you will see the same penalty for Gordon and Johnson that you did for Junior, although it would not suprise me to see Chad get an extra race or two.
I think Nascar will use the parking of the cars Friday as the additional part of the penalty.

he is a hell of a driver, but until he checks a lot of his ego at the trailer, and starts lisyening to his crew chief, and starts showing more give and take on the track, he is not going to realize his potential.

If the car fit the templates then why were they punished? The car either fits or it doesn't. It was way out of tolerance. I've read that it was very obvious just by looking at it.

this is why it wasn't a mistake. The wing isn't given to the team until they pass initial tech inspection at the track.. so .. if the brackets were "left on the car after a wind tunnel test", like Tony Eury said .. they would have been noticed during initial tech inspection, and they would have never had a chance to bolt the wing to them .. make sense? .. the only way you would be able to bolt a wing onto illegal brackets would be if the brackets were already on the car (not the case, see above) or if you grabbed the wrong pair in the garage after your wing was issued (possible, but not what DEI claimed)

the car fit the templates perfectly .. the entire template. (some press reports mention it did not, but they are wrong)
Have you ever stood next to a current cup car? Not a show car that tours around .. but one that actually runs a race? (honest question here.. I am not trying to be a jerk) There is not a straight body panel on them they are twisted, turned, humped, bent, curved, crooked, almost any word you can come up with would describe them ..
Carl's car from Michigan looked like a damn banana it was so curved.
The teams (all of them, not just Hendrick) design the body to hit the template points, then use cad and everything else in the world they can think of to shape the body around the template points to get the maximum aero advantage possible while still fitting all the templates.
It is easier to do on the current car, because the templates are not connected to each other .. in the COT, they have to fit the Claw .. a single, whole body template.
BOTH the 24 and the 48 fit the template perfectly ..
the issue here is that Nascar also has a digital coordinate machine (laser measuring arm that feeds a CAD measuring program) they use at their R&D facility to further define how they want the cars to be built/fit etc ..
If they brought that to the track and measured every car with it.. I bet more than just the 24 and 48 would be outside the tolerances Nascar has decided are acceptable for the COT. In Rick's interview today, he said he bet at least 10 would fail. I think it would be more .
This is the way it has always been done .. the crew cheif's push the gray area of the rule book .. in this instance, there is nothing in the rule book that says they couldn't do what they did .. It is just Nascar's interpretation. which is fine .. it is their rules . they get to make them up and enforce them as they see fit. Nascar doesn't want people playing in the gray areas of the COT rule book, like they have done for years in the current one.
I am not trying to defend the Hendrick team for what they did .. I undertsand what they did, it just baffles me as to why .. it will be interesting to hear the reasoning behind it...

Hahahaha 41st to 7th!! Damn is that ain't some good driving and pit strategy. Now here comes the "oh he cheated blah blah blah" stuff.
That race was to all the #24 haters out there that said it couldn't be done!
Even though he didn't win, 7th is still very respectable from starting 41st.
