Wanting A Mazda RX-8
I'm not a big fan or the RX8 or its engine. However, I understand your dilemma - price and not wanting front drive.
From a previous post of mine. Here are the toys on my list. If I go for the Cobra I would probably keep the Civic for bad weather, etc... any of the other three I would probably sell the Civic to offset some cost...
In this order. BTW, those are the turbo version GM's -GXP and Redline...

Now, if money wasn't a hold back I WOULD have a Mallet Solstice!

There was a huge recall put out by Mazda North America a year ago or so in which every single one had to have the engine replaced or something like that. I've also heard that fuel mileage is shaky at best, and oil consumption is more than normal. If I was looking at something semi-comparable, I'd be looking at a 350Z, S2000, Miata, or maybe even the Nissan Altima Coupe with the V6 (270hp and a 6 speed). Those are nice, we have one at the dealership where I work and it's pretty peppy.

EDIT:
SWEET! I think I just added a new car to my list. A friends mother recently bought a sedan, and he's been telling me all about it. I had no idea there was a coupe. Finally, they're starting to think about the rest of us again... Not everyone wants everything in the 4 door flavor...

When you guys say short on power, are you looking at #'s or personal experience? I thought it had a ton of power when I drove one, but that was the 1st time I had ever driven a car (amazing, huh? I've only driven an F-250, 150, and an X-terra and a jeep Cherokee.)
After I drove that car, I got in a Cavalier (4-banger), short on power by far
After that a Malibu with a 6 in it--much better but not like the RX8
After that a Mazda 323 (1984 with a 4 banger)-- NO POWER!!!
Overall, I liked the RX-8 best, but as you can see, my experience with cars is VERY limited. I have ridden in a WRX-STi, and I loved it...maybe you should consider it...???
Anybody wanna give me your Cobras or anything else so I can experience some power???

VDC is Vehicle Dynamic Control, which is basically traction/slip control. Uses a combination af engine braking, brake power, and timing retard to prevent wheelspin. You can turn it off for more fun though.
I figured I'll give my input since I owned a RX8 for 10 months (bought it new) and ended up trading it for a 02 Lightning. I loved the RX8 for the amazing drivetrain (one of the best transmission/lsd/clutch combos). Better than a E46M3. I came off a convertible M3 (E36) with full suspension upgrades and it handled brilliantly. Funny thing is, the RX8 while it pitched way more than the M3, still went faster around the corners. And you gotta love the 9500rpm cutout. I ultimately grew tired of the lack of power (It will only run low 15's high 14's) and traded it for a 500+hp Lightning. Now that I looked back, I miss the RX8 and its great build quality. By the way, mine only ate about a half a quart of oil every 3000 miles (most 350Zs, M3's eat more) and Mazda's warranty and repairs are excellent. I got my brakes to whine by doing repeated stops from top speed (152mph, stock) and they replaced all rotors and pads free of charge. It is also very comfortable in daily driving and I think it looks great. The only thing it needs is a Greddy turbo kit and the car would be almost perfect. I paid $23100 for my RX8 after 4 hours of negotiating (29K sticker) and only option was the 6spd high power option. Go drive one, you will not be disappointed. My recommendation, get an 05 for about $20K, you'll have atleast 4 years left on warranty (Mazda raised warranty to 6 years 60,000 miles on 05 up models) and can beat the living daylights out of it without breaking.
THANKS for the imput guys... ya i like S2000's also but i cant do no 2 seater lol and 350z are nice also.. i like the g35s ill probably wait till the g37 comes out and trade my truck in.. lol good price for this rx-8 no? http://www.cars.com/go/search/detail...aff=national#1
