Storms? Turn it OFF!

Nice T-storms rolled through central Tx this evening, I completely forgot that the computer was turned on.. Power flicked off and back on after maybe 2 seconds.. anyway, all I can figure is that it zapped my ethernet card, my dsl is a no go. DSL modem seems fine. Hooked up the old dial-up connection and it works, but OMG is it SLLLLOOOOWWWWWW!!!.. LOL...
Just remember boys and girls, shut it DOWN if you have storms coming your way!!

And yes, everything is plugged into a "surge-protected" power strip.. If the ethernet card is all it is, I'm thankfull.. only a $15 or so fix..

We lost a computer that way once a few years ago. Power flickered, PC never powered back up. I was never able to recover a lot of my kids picture that were on that thing.

Unless the storm zapped the hard drive, you should be able to recover your files. Just set it as the slave drive in another tower and copy them off.

I know whatcha mean.

Happened to me a few years ago....prolly just the nic. If you can boot the machine, and use it normally, it's the nic.

I'd say 15 minutes to replace, 10 - 15 bucks and your back in action.

Surge protection........................If you do not protect all avenues of inrush you are p***in in the wind. You must protect AC input.DSL,cable, phone inputs;Plus your router/switch inputs & outputs.

I put my tower on a wireless NIC. So... only power, and thats going through a UPS. If you get a surge big enough, simply turning off your system will do you no good. If you are that worried, best to unplug the entire system.
