Yea the compaq battery never really did either, and is even worse now, but she leaves it plugged in 99.8% of the time so I can't blame the quickly degraded battery for her misuse. But it never lasted for more than an hour to an hour and a half if it was lucky and I followed procedure to the letter to break it in.

I found a Dell I liked, just need to figure out my work discount. I also found a Toshiba.
7-8-9 years ago I had a Toshiba and an Acer, this was back when they were running widows 98. Acer was one of the top of the line then, and I liked the Toshiba alot more. I used it more often and it still lasted longer than the Acer did.

I agree. I've been seeing more of them around lately. I think they're trying to make a comeback (or something).

Yesterday I picked up a cheapy Compaq laptop at Best Buy. 399.99. It's a POS but basicly what I needed was an internet machine. I have my old emachine at the shop for the duty, but it's just too old to keep up. I need something that I can turn on, boot up quickly, and get on the internet quickly. I'm not sure what I think of this thing yet. It's not fast by any stretch, but it's lightyears ahead of that old emachine. So far I'm not a big fan of Vista either.

At home I've got a Toshiba laptop that I bought a few years ago. It was a good one at the time. It was 1400.00. It's now only slightly better than this new Compaq. I had some problems with it early on but have since solved them and it's been running well for a while now.

I picked up a HP desk top to take over for where the emachine was in my house. It's a cheaper unit but works well for what I use it for.

You bet. If you want a durable, reliable laptop you still can't beat a Thinkpad. You WILL pay accordingly though. However, they don't make a 17". If I were in the market for a new laptop I'd get a T60.

If you want to install a soundblaster card get the Acer. Their the only ones left i believe that haven't switched to PCxpress slots. No one makes a sound card for that.

No one has mentioned IBM?

We use the IBM think pads at work and they hold up great. When us mechanics get our hand on stuff we can generally ruin anything.

We have over a couple hundred laptops and now use IBM exclusively, leasing them for only 2 years. (soon to be only 1 year.)

I haven't seen any mention of Gateway as of yet. A couple years ago I would have been the first one to tell you not to buy them. This company has now come a long way in cleaning up their reputataion. I bought two of them a little over a year ago and have not had one single bit of trouble with either of them to this date. In fact I am still loving these machines.
