In my opinion... either/or.

At one point in time, I would've leaned one way and at another, I would've leaned the other way. Right now, I think they're both making very good chipsets and that there really isn't that big of a gap between them on performance.

JMO.

For what your doing it doesn't matter.

If you really needed the horsepower, Intel chips have reclaimed the throne for the title of "Speed King". AMD had a good run, but Intel is #1 once again.

I work at Intel and I say get AMD! They're firing me in 6 weeks because they're shipping all support to Costa Rica so screw 'em. HAHAHAHA

But seriously, my brother is a huge pc guy and he HATES Intel. I guess it's known for getting too hot. I dunno, but that's my $0.02.

When I researched laptops a couple months ago, most what I read was that the Intel Core Duo 2 was the best chip out there right now.

I'm not disappointed with my 1.6Ghz

Your brother is in denial. Intel chips are more power efficient and use a considerable amount less of wattage at full power. Watts = heat. Less watts, well... you get the idea. Your brother needs therapy.

Your PC sucks, what's the point? Odds are it was other components and not the CPU itself. Boo-ya!

You could very well be right. Again...

I've bounced around between the 2 over the years, ussually following reviews of each new set.

Right now I'm running an AMD Athlon Dual core 64x2 2.00 Ghz processor I got in this Dell last fall.

Speed: ehh what I've seen, Intell is faster at computing and better for games.
Multi tasking: It kicks donkey in the nuts. I can't bog this thing down.

For your needs, it won't really matter one way or the other. Specifically speaking, at this point in time Intel Core 2 Duo processors have it over the comparable AMD X2 processors. By more than a little. Not even mentioning the Intel quad-core processor because it won't matter for your stated needs.

Interesting to see the "true" quad-core that AMD releases later this year.

BTW, you can save money if you chose AMD--they are slightly cheaper right now than their Intel brethren.

If it were me, I would be choosing an Intel Core 2 and nVidia SLI graphics card--for the Direct X v10 support that the newer games can take advantage of.

Either one, wouldn't worry. Dual core, quad core, just get plenty of RAM, and a good PCI-X video card.

Man, it's quite around my office today, this blows.

Intel. No brainer. I'm a Systems Administrator and can say without a doubt the Intel procs are beating the snot out of the AMD procs. AMD is still scrambling to catch up with Intel's last round of procs, and when they do, Intel will be releasing their next version that AMD will have to catch up to. My dual quad-core HP servers make me smile ear to ear, performance is incredible!

Get a dual core Intel now and you can upgrade to quad core later with the same board. On the other hand any AMD board you get now won't work with their quad cores when they come out.

But if you wait till next year when they both release the Sies core, 64 bit x6, at umpteen time's the speed, and more multitasking, then you have to buy a whole new MB for either one anyway.
