New 5th Wheel

You all know I just got a sweet deal on a fifth-wheel
trailer! This thing is sweet! It has all the amenities that
a person could want and more.

The guy I bought it from said I should get a one-ton
pick-up truck to pull it, but I knew better than that.

I did some precision modifications to my truck and it pulls
it great!

I admit that it took some time, but from the attached
pictures you will be able to see that it was well worth the
effort!

Hooked up and ready to fly!! It really smooths out the ride
in the SUV. I did have to air up the rear tires a bit
(around 160 psi) .

I added some heavy-duty chain for extra support on the
tailgate (note that I used the "Sever-Duty ' S ' hooks to
attach the chain). I also paid-up for some BIG 5/16
sheetmetal screws to attach the frame to the tailgate.
Yeah, I know it ' s overkill, but I don ' t want to have
any accidents.

Much of my time was spent on the front porch whittling down
that MASSIVE 4x4 board to fit precisely into the ball mount
receiver. Also note that I used a 14" piece of 1x4 to
distribute the load more evenly

It cost a little more, but you just can ' t be too safe
when pulling a trailer of this magnitude!!

I have been seriously concerned about pulling mine with my truck.
I converted it from Goseneck to 5th wheel, the weld shop should be calling me anytime to come pick up the new king pin box for the trailer. I didnt trust my welding abilities and dont have a welder big or percise enough to weld that thick of steel. After I get it then I'll install my 5th wheel hitch on the truck. That moment of backing up under it and setting it down, I admit has me a little intemidated I'm not sure whats going to happen yet and then trying to move it also.

But now, after seeing that! I'm not worried!

That ain't no joke. A few years back I spotted an old school 70's land yacht with a 5th wheel hitch mounted/welded to the roof and it was pulling a huge TT. Now that was crazy looking.

I hope to.
Havent hooked on to it yet. I didnt make it to the weld shop today to see if the hitch is done.

I'm only going about 45 mile with it and it's mostly flat with a few slight inclines. Worst one is getting it out of my drive. I wouldn't try to go to the mountains with it or anything with a 1/2 ton. But I think for this short trip it will be fine.
