What % do you tip?

Just wondering what % you tip? Do you always tip, even if the service sucks?

From my point I normal y do 15% (20% if you WOW me) but you have to earn it. A tip is not a given in my book. I know you don’t have a lot of control over the “cook” but you do control how long my glass stays empty.

15-25% on a dinner.
35-50% on a bar tab.

Bad service & I don't tip anything or I pay with my card & tip $0.01 just so the turd will have to explain why they only received a $0.01 tip. I refuse to accept that I'm "obligated" to tip just because.

For everything else, I start at 10% and adjust as necessary. When I eat at the Old Homestead in the Borgatta, I've been known to tip 25%. At a typical South Jersey diner, it's usually between 12% - 15%.

KC-10 FE out...

Usually 15% unless the service was poor.

being a manager at a restaurant I'm very qualified to answer this question.
The majority of customers no matter what place they go to tend to tip 18%-19% of the overall bill amount. Me personally knowing that most waiters/waitresses only make ~ $3.30 per hour and rely on their tips to get them to their minimum wage of ~ $ 6.00 per hour I tend to tip a little more, but that's just me.

If service was poor, I leave a penny on the table (even if I have to go to my truck and get one out of the ashtray.

If good, 15 to 20%.

It varies considerably for me........

If I'm in an area I visit often, and I am pretty sure I will visit again soon wether I like the food alot or the service or the atmosphere, what ever the reason and I know business will bring me back in the next few months. Then I tip large. Large enough that if that waitress or waiter is still there they will remember me. Depending on the place and how often I might be there I try to gauge what will get the place a buzz. I have been known to match the bill 100% to both the waiter and the cook and on rare ocasions just give them each a $50 spot.. If I am back in a few months then the next time I go, everyone already knows me, as soon as they see me get out of the car so my party and I recieve VIP treatment. It has aided to close some large deals. I am pretty sure that I have made every penny back off setting myself up.

If I'm not going to be back, for what ever reason and the service is good, then 15-20%.

If service was fair but my glass went dry at any point. Then it really depends on how busy they are at the time, sometimes if they are busy and I'm not a regular I dont expect them to treat me any better than anyone else and I might still tip 15%.

If I had to wait what I deem excessive or flag them down for any reason for normal service...... nothing or a penny depending on the circumstances.

Why leave a penny if the service is poor? Have the guts and the class to discretely tell the server what was wrong---that way they can correct it. Man up and tell them quietly but strongly why and where they failed as a server. Normally, since I tend to go to the same restaurants and have the same servers, I tend to tip 20%. My brother worked his way through grad school as a server, so I am fairly cognisant of the difficulties that may arise. I try to differentiate between the server's fault and that of the cook or the restaurant itself.

Here is an intersting site...

15-20% is about where I hover, a bit higher for a bar tab maybe. I'm quick to let the server know that they did an excellent job or that they suck.

I agree with Tim, I don't think you're accomplishing anything if you burn the server on the tip and don't let them or management know what was wrong. One of the great things about making mistakes in life is that we can learn from them so we don't repeat them.

I did that once... never again!!!!!

The service was miserable, although the guy appeared to either be fairly new or absolutely clueless.
I could see in the preperation area and watched my food sit for 10 mins as he walked by it numerous times before bringing it out, then had to wait til he brought some silverware. My glass went dry 3 times I had to flag him over each time to fill it and then took forever to get anything back. 1/2 my meal I sat there with my mouth so dry I couldn't get another bite in.
He seemed frazzled and the ywerent that busy so thats why I deciced he was new. I had pity, so when he brought me the bill I added 10% to the bill and signed it then discreetly informed him that he did not earn this, that I thought he culd do better, atleast keep my drink full and bring my food warm. The guy started crying right there in the middle of the dining area. I'm talking weeping and whaling! I stood up, walked him back into the prep area to cease the spectacle show. After 30 mins of me and the manager having a heart to heart with him and getting him calmed back down, I fiannly got to leave.

Yep there is 30 mins of my time and an entire event I wished had never of happened.

Just because some place charges ridiculous prices for their food and drink doesn't make me feel obligated to give them some big fat tip. It doesn't cost the wait staff anymore to bring me a $2 hamburger or a $20 steak. I base it on the overall service of the waiter/waitress.

I generally tip 15-20% as well. One thing that I can't stand... having to wait for the check. When I am ready to go, I am ready to go. I realize that some people like to sit around and chat after a meal, but I am generally ready to leave as soon as I am done eating.
