Asking a general question . . .

So I'm putting it here in GD first. After I get the GD folks opinon, I might start asking more indepth questions in the 2004+ forum . . .

The FX2 . . . anybody got one? Anyone driven it? THoughts, comments, etc.

Other than the 4 wheel drive what differentiates it from the FX4?

And really, how much does one need 4 wheel drive? If you're doing minor towing (one or two watercraft - which means having the rear wheels in the water on the ramp) do you need 4 wheel drive for that? If you have applainces such as a fridge or water heater, 2WD is fine for that, yes? What advantages, if any, does 4WD offer for everyday kind of stuff?

(Does it show I'm not a truck person? THe only trucks I've had are my Lightnings . . . speed and handling in a big vehicle . . . God I miss those trucks) . . .

Is it a good truck, or what?

I test drove it yesterday (had 20' wheels) . . . seemed nice . . .

K wants to know, so let's hear it.

This is a two part question so, I'll address each part.
4wd is very helpful on a boat ramp when retrieving a 32 foot Bayliner.
2wd is more than sufficient for "one or two watercraft".

4wd is the obvious choice towing a fridge or water heater.
A FX2 wouldn't obtain highway speed with a fridge, I don't think it's legal either.

Note: Whatever you decide, don't put the fridge in the bed.
(or somebody will be making you a sig)

OK . . . I didn't mean towing (or dragging) a fridge or stove or water heater . . . I meant in the bed (and not standing upright) . . . just wondering if maybe the suspension on the 4WD is stronger or something, better for handling heavy loads in the bed or whatever . . .

and damn dude, you're up late . . .

I believe the payload is actually slightly less with a 4x4.
The suspension under the bed is the same and the extra weight of 4x4 components cut into residual of available payload.

To get 'stronger' suspensions you have to go to the Superduty, F250 etc...

So, you can cancel out payload as an excuse to get a 4x4.
Better go with 'Being prepared for snow'.

Remember your thread about waking up an not going back to sleep.
Happened to me.

For you Kobster, 4WD is nothing more than added weight and drivetrain complexity that is not needed. You don't need to yank a heavy boat from a slippery launch. A couple jetskis are nothing... You don't climb mountains... you don't go muddin' with Cleadus after pounding a case of PBR.

*must get sleepies now*

Hi boys there are sure a lot of folks here this evening that we don't normally see on the night shift!!

Sorry Kobi, I'm not sure what the FX2 is and I have never driven an FX4. I tend to agree with D and Raoul, you really don't have need of a 4x4 for what you are doing.

And about that refridgerator, I buy a refridgerator about every twelve years.
Seems I do buy a water heater every seven years or so but, I don't install them so, the plumber brings it.

I do have to get rid of the old water heater though.
That isn't a problem for me either because I live at the top of a hill.

Heck, now you got me wonderin why I even have a truck.

It's Kobi's fault. He sent me PMs (was notified on my trusty BB), and when I got home from the bar I had to hop online right quick to read them. Now the room is moving and I seriously need sleep. I'm so outta here...

There be snow where I'm going, not at Buffalo NY levels, but it does snow . . . but I still don't think it justifies FX4 . . .

I've got fun story about test driving the Tundra . . . but for another time.

Bedtime for Bonzo here too.

Sorry about the insomina Raoul. I'm taking a bunch of pills so I don't wake up until 10AM !

Better living thru chemistry!!!!

Can a FX2 haul a yacht? Just wondering because I'm thinking of getting one.

Just yesterday I took a drive, doing some geocaching, fishing stuff. And took a wrong road. I seen a turn off to the right and noticed a few people with trucks there. The turn off went to a lake, and it had one heck of a drop off. So anyhow, I took that dirt trail straight down. Once I got to the bottom and leveled off the trail made a loop, I followed and realized looking back up, there was no way I was going to get back to the road without going into 4X4 and I was right. Had I not had 4X4 I would have had to pay one of them boys to pull me out. Or what if nobody was there? I had left my wife in town so she could do some shopping, had no cell service. I would have been screwed. That's why I have 4X4.
It's very rare to see 4X2's here in Montana.

I don't have one, but besides the trim differences they're not much different than an XLT. The FX2 is kinda like the F150 Sports of before, they share a lot of similarities with the FX4 other than being two wheel drive instead of four. The front lower bumper trim is different on an FX2, the grill is unique and I think the red piping on the seats is an FX2 exclusive.

I don't think 4WD will benefit you much for your uses, K. One or two watercraft will be cake, that much weight won't really be pulling on the truck as you're retrieving coming back up the ramp like a 20-something foot boat would, so you'll be fine there.

If/when I ever trade my truck in, I'm about 90% sure I'll be buying an FX2...in Dark Shadow Gray.
