Gordon didn't break anything .. He had no contract with Bill Davis or Ford for Winston Cup, only for Busch. everyone assumed there was a contract in place for Winston Cup, but there wasn't. Once he signed with Chevy and Hendricks for Cup, the plane qwas to allow him to run the complete Busch season for BD, and a partial cup season for RH, then go full time Cup the next year when the BD Busch contract expired.

Ford and Bill Davis chose to let Jeff out of his Busch deal, because Ford didn't want him to cross platforms .. Once BD let him out of the Busch deal, then Rick moved him to a full time cup schedule a year earlier than planned.

OK he broke a verbal agreement.Biil wasn't happy about it but it was a wise career move for Jeff.
