Wow!

Pulled this from mycarstats.com Details: I WAS IN A BANK DRIVE-UP DRIVING MY DAUGHTERS 2004 FORD 150 TRUCK. WHEN I STARTED TO LEAVE THE TRUCK LURCHED AND THE ENGINE WENT TO FULL SPEED. I IMMEDIATELY APPLIED THE BRAKES BUT THEY DID NOTHING TO SLOW THE TRUCK. I WAS HEADED STRAIGHT FOR THE BANK WHERE THE TELLERS WERE, SO I TURNED SHARPLY TO THE RIGHT. THE TRUCK KEPT GOING AT A HIGH RATE OF SPEED WITH ME TRYING TO STOP IT WITH THE BRAKES. IT SHOT THROUGH THE PARKING LOT AND ACROSS A VERY BUSY ROAD WHERE A CAR HIT ME. THE IMPACT OF THE OTHER CAR DIDNT EVEN PHASE THE TRUCK. IT KEPT GOING, OVER THE CURB ACROSS THE STREET, THROUGH A BURGER KING PARKING LOT AND RAMMED INTO METAL STAIRS ON THE SIDE OF A JEWELRY STORE WHERE IT FINALLY STOPPED. I HIT THE STAIRCASE AT A TREMENDOUS RATE OF SPEED YET THE AIRBAGS DIDNT DEPLOY. THE CAR THAT HIT ME WAS TOTALED AND THE DRIVER WENT TO THE HOSPITAL. MY DAUGHTERS TRUCK WAS TOTALED AND I HAD TO GO TO THE HOSPITAL WITH INJURIES THAT TURNED OUT TO BE BRUISES ALL OVER MY BODY, ESPECIALLY ON MY LEGS. THE STAIRCASE WAS DESTROYED AND A CAR NEARBY HAD DAMAGE. THE INSURANCE WAS NOT ADEQUATE TO COVER ALL THE DAMAGE. THE INSURANCE COMPANY SENT SOMEONE OUT TO DO AN ENGINEERING REPORT ON THE TRUCK BUT HE COULD NOT FIND THE CAUSE. THAT DIDN€™T SURPRISE ME AS THERE WAS LITTLE LEFT TO INSPECT. THIS WAS DEFINITELY A MECHANICAL FAILURE. I DID NOT HAVE MY FOOT ON THE GAS PEDDLE. I WAS TRYING TO STOP THE TRUCK WITH THE BRAKES AND STEERING TO AVOID PEOPLE AND OTHER OBSTACLES. FORD NEEDS TO LOOK INTO THIS AS IT IS AN EXTREMELY DANGEROUS FLAW OR DEFECT. I AM GOING TO BE RESPONSIBLE FOR A LOT OF MONEY TO REPAIR THE DAMAGE THAT THE INSURANCE DIDNT PAY.

Holy

There is no way a modern vehicle's properly working brake system can be overpowered by its own engine. Actually, the answer to this "mystery" is contained in the event description itself. The guy caused a lot of damage, has insufficient insurance, and now is trying to find a scapegoat, i.e., the vehicle manufacturer, to pay for the damages.

This is not something that happened to me but rather something that I took off of carstats.com and posted! I have no idea if this person is a member of our forum.

I was with a buddy once who had a 90's F250, and when he turned it on the truck it was at FULL acceleration. He tryed turning the key off but it would not shut off, we tryed disconecting the batterys but the truck would not shut off. Man that was scary hearing that diesel screaming and hopeing that it would not go into to gear, the truck was like that for it seemed a good 20 minutes and I felt like it was going to blow up. Thank god we were at a truck stop and a mobile mechanic on his rig shut it down by pulling the fuel line The guy fixed the problem within 5 minutes and refused us to pay him

This happend to that one guy who parked next to that rich director guy........remember? Any ways, from how he described it I bet he was really scared. Any one would of been, if you say you wouldnt have been scared, you are lieing. All those things 'put in nuetral, shut it off, etc' wont be going through your mind when your 3 ton truck all of a sudden takes off WOT with out your foot on the gas. Then when you try to press the brakes it doesnt stop the truck. After hitting another car and still flying I think you'd be really scared and or dazed.

I love the fact he called it a "mechanical" problem. As stated, turn the truck off, put it in neutral or hit something before you're going 50+. Since our trucks are drive-by-wire there was no mechanical linkage to get stuck.

Before anyone repeats it, I HAVE had this happen to me... on more than one occasion. The first was in a 1971 Ford pickup with a 390 & a broken motor mount. I was going up a big mound of sand in the woods and the truck stuck WOT. The same truck and I dropped a 351w in it... I flipped it 3 1/2 times, and ended up on it's roof. Once again, truck stuck WOT. Both times it took a couple of seconds to find out what was happening (esp when I rolled it) and I immediately reached for the key. Again with a supercharged 1988 Mustang... broken motor mount, 10.5" slicks and a launch at 6,500 RPM's. When trying to hit 2nd I realized it was stuck at WOT. The car was bouncing off the MSD-6AL rev limiter and I just shut it down.

Can happen, but never heard of or seen it happen on a drive-by-wire car. Kinda like people who still bring up the cruise control fire problem...
