Window tint house windows?

Anyone tried it?

I put window tint on the window in my bedroom because I like it REALLY dark when I sleep and it helped.. But I was thinking about putting it on the windows in my living room and kitchen to maybe cut the AC bill a little bit this summer.

Anyone tried it? Does it make the house noticably cooler?

Any opinions.. It's cheap and if it works, it'll pay for itself quickly.

I put some on the windows on the west side of my house and it does help out. You can tell a difference before and after.

I put tint on half of my windows about two years ago. Not only does it save me a few bucks on the AC bill, the house shows better.

I did mine, and it helped my AC drastically...

After a few 108 degree days in Dallas, and coming home to an AC-cooled 88 degree house, I knew I had to do something.

Now, with the same unit, on the same 108 degree days, my AC can keep the house at a decent 78 degrees. Which isn't bad when the AC guys tell you the best you can really hope for from your AC is 20 degrees cooler than the outside temp.

Cost me $330 to do 12 windows. I need to have them come back and do my other two bed rooms, but I've held off because they charge by the pane, and those rooms have those 12-pane windows.

That is something I have been wanting to do for awhile now. I have foil on my bedroom window at the moment, and that works. Looks like chit from the outside though.

Yeah, I need to do that and take the foil down.

I had foil on my windows too, but we have a privacy fence, so no one could see it. Still ticked the wife off though. I didn't realize the energy savings, I was doing it for sleep/sanity, working 5:45 PM to 6 AM, on a rotating schedule. (M, T, Fr, SA, SU, We, Th).. Hard, but I LOVED IT, every other weekend was a 3-day weekend!!! That's hard to beat.

I said, "When you start working nights, and trying to sleep in the day time- you'll understand." I could make my room look like midnight, at high noon.

I'd put my dogs out, close my door, turn the TV up loud enough to drown out background noises and the occasional bark from the dogs, and I went from cat-napping for 2 hours, then being unable to fall back to sleep, to damn-near over-sleeping. Life was good- with the foil...

I had foil on my bedroom window at my old apartment... Holy smokes what a difference.. The window in the bedroom was about 6'x7' window... it got hot in there before the foil.

Saving $30-$50 a month is awesome.

My Dad bought a large roll (3 feet wide, who knows how long) of a dark mesh netting, (nylon I believe) and hung it on the outside over the windows for summer. It really helped a ton to keep it cool inside the house and reduce our dependency on the AC.

As for window tint, the only downside is it will likely be pricey, and you will want to pick a pro installer so it looks good. ALL WINDOW TINT INSTALLERS ARE NOT CREATED EQUALLY!!!!!

Oh, and if you use a house cleaner/maid service be sure to remind them NOT to use windex or ammonia based products on it...

Yeah, the guy who did mine is a pro- he's been tinting my cars for years. That's why I got the "hook-up" on the interior. But, he's done businesses all over DFW... He said commercial is where tinters make their real money. I shoudl become his protege', with as often as I swap out cars, I could save about 450/600 every 2-3 years on window tinting.

Just spent $50 on the tint.. it'll be enough for the living room and kitchen. I can put the tint on... it's really easy.
