This is a quote from another sig thread.

We can come up with a formal policy, but like our no commercial posts for non-advertisers policy and no classifieds in the forums policy, policies are often ignored or overlooked and enforcement ultimately comes down to reported posts. Plus, people seem to frown up "formal" policies. I imagine that some people that don't think they would get caught up in such a policy would indeed be.
For instance, I personally think a 100k image in a signature is far too large. In a thread with ten posts, that would mean 1mb of images have to be loaded if they are all that large. If they are from another server over which we have no control, the time to load would be even greater. I also find it of no value whatsoever when people display their signature in more than one post in a thread. Do you still want me to make a policy?
For now, the best way to approach this is to report a post that includes what you deem to be an obnoxiously sized signature and we will take the appropriate action. I don't recall having seen any of these for months, so I don't know how big an issue it really is.
The reality is that many users are simply unaware that it might be an issue or have no idea how to fix it if they did know it was an issue. If you have 8.0mpbs cable service, all images load lightning quick. What should be the performance baseline? Basic DSL customers, dial-up customers and corporate surfers will all see it a different way. If you are taking a picture that your friend made in Photoshop, or just shrunk down a jpeg that came from your digicam with no understand of optimizing for the web, that might result in a huge signature.

I was going to PM this to you but you cant recive PM's yet.

This is just to show some design tips, it's the designers job to give the image order and draw attention to the things you want the viewer to look at and in the order that you want them to look at them. There are many tricks used to emphasize.
An organised and thought out image would start out looking something like this.....

Then it would get tweaked and fine tuned.......
If I was going to build the sig hten I would shrink the SUPERDUTY text and the King RancH badge. (notice the trick in the text there where I matched the text to what they used on the badge by capitailing the last letter) Also notice in the badge they use small caps and capitialize the two ends. Matching fonts and type style like that can help an image have structure.... IN the end it would get changed 100 times, elements would get added and removed. By hte time it was said and done it rarely looks anything like what it started out like. That image there would be toootally different when I was done with it.
Your on hte right path the best thing to do is look at work, study it and practice practice practice. You should see some of my first work....... it;s was nasty.

Thanks Matt. It's an idea I have been kicking around for a few days. HenkyJenky did one similar to it in another thread, and that was the "push" I needed to see what I could do with it.
