Dirtbike

I have long dreamt of owning my own dirtbike .

I think this summer i will pull the trigger. I have ridden before and i dream of riding every night... haha. I don't have 6 or 7 thousand to lay down so i was thinking of getting a used bike.

So my price range of under 2000 puts me in the 1980's range. I haven't looked for about a year and a half at used bikes but suddenly there seems to be an influx of chinese brand bikes for sale.

So the question is: an older brand name bike (Honda, Kawasaki, Yamaha, ETC) Or a brand new knockoff. The newer one is $500 more.

Pics of the new and the description:

NEW 200CC dirt bike, single cylinder, 4 stroke, forced air cooling, kick/electric start, CDI ignition, max. speed 130 km/h, wheelbase 54 inch, front and rear disc brakes, maximum load 150 kg. Available in red, blue, black. Now accepting Visa, Mastercard and Interact. $1895.

I am roughly 75kgs.

Thanks.

This is true...

My roomate got his '02 CR 250 2-stroke for $2K. It was in great condition. I would rather have a late 80's Honda or Yamaha rather than a knock off... but thats just my opinion. If you dont want something as powerful as the 250 2-stroke, go with a 125 or a 250 4-stroke. Look around and be patient and you can probably find a good deal.

dont get one of those cheap knockoffs, with 2-3gs you can get a 2000 year or so used 250 2 stroke or 4 sroke

If I had to chose between the bike I have now, 98KX 250, (which is worth about what the chinese knockoff is new) its a no brainer. You will not be happy with a knockoff.

nvrenuff you could easily get 3000-3200 for your bike... Chinese knockoff is 1850.

Wow, prices on used bikes are much higher in Canada, even after accounting for the exchange rate.

Here in California, a good '98 KX250 would go for less than $1,500 US.

Down here, you get the most bang for you $ with a Japanese 250cc two stroke MX bike. Anything built in the last 25 years will run rings around the Chinese knock-off trail bike.

The 250cc two stroke will have plenty of power, maybe too much for a beginner. On the plus side, you won't need to upgrade anytime soon.

Another alternative is the Kawasaki KDX200. This is a mild mannered two stroke trail bike that is beginner friendly. It has recently been discontinued, but is has not been changed since the mid '90s. It is much less powerful than a 250cc MX two stroke, and the suspension is not as good, especially on big jumps. The KDX200 is usually pretty cheap. The first year of the water cooled KDX200 was 1989. Anything from '89 on should work fine for you.

125CC is too small for me i fear. I am 6'3" and 150lbs. I've been on bikes before. I rode a KDX220 and loved it. I wouldn't be afraid of the motocross 250... i don't push myself but the power would be there.

Both my friend and I are going to get bikes...he'll prolly get one Friday and i'll get one next month. So we'll see.

Get you a CRF450R....lol Then agian you don't want to kill yourself. My buddy just sold his. He has raced/rode dirtbikes forever and he stepped up to this bad boy and hurt himself once and then he just knew he was going to hurt himself on it agian so he went back to his 125.

i say no on the knock off.. and if your a beginner i would go 4 stroke 250. but if you want some very reliable and not have to worry about constant maintenence a honda crf 230 or yamaha ttr 230. i used to own a crf 230.. it was unkillable and its also electric start. it is a good starter learning bike.. and with a few mods they are a pretty nice bike.
