What is considered a "knock off" in the dirt bike world? I know nothing about them.

They are brand new cheap bikes....

Essentially just manufactured cheaply...no brand name... no R&D into the bike.

The chinese never invent anything.

you forgot to mention inferior quality, looks and performance in both power and suspension, and oh yeah, good luck finding parts on a friday before you head out for weekend

For 2 Grand you can get a pretty nice bike. Are you looking at Woods or MX riding?

Woods I'd look at a Newer KDX200, or an older (1999 or so KTM 200exc) both two smokes.

For Woods any of the big three 250's would be good. May have a hard time getting a 4 stroker at that price range, maybe an older Yamaha 400F or ratted out 250F... You could probably find an older XR250, maybe a DRZ400 as well.

Definitely don't get one of the Chinese bikes. Something Big will break and hurt you...

I ended up selling a 2003 YZ125 modded out for only $2,500. . Point is, you can find some good deals out there if you look hard enough.

Dude dont settle for inferior quility because you will regret it in the long run. My friend left for the marines and sold me his 2005 hond crf 250 for 1800 dollars. I remember reading somewhere that the chinease knock off's were so badly produced that they were able to bore out the cylinder head with a brillo pads. I remember now, it was in Racer X magazine. Just be pacient and look for used bikes; great deals do still happen.

Although they are now discontinued the KX and CR 500 two strokes were awesome all around bikes. I don't know how many times my KX saved me from going *** over tea kettle backwards down a steep hill because it just keep chugging along up. Incredible torque and they only weigh about 15-20 more pounds than the 250s. I remember the first time I rode one, it like a revelation, I never wanted anything smaller again. Don’t worry about the power because that’s what your wrist is for and if you can’t control the throttle then you should not be riding anyway.
