Don't use a personal check. Use Paypal, Cashier's check, Money Order, etc.

Definitely Paypal: with it, you have some recourse thru Ebay. Plus, do the following:
1. Check the sellers feedback, and esp how he responded to the negatives [if any against him]. If he answers like a total moron, go the other way.

2. Check to see what he has sold/bought. If it is just a few low dollar items, this is also a warning flag.

3. How long he has been on Ebay?

4. The personal check surprises me: Is he going to hold it until it clears? I sell on Ebay [over 2700 positives so far ] and basically do not accept a personal check unless it is from someone that I have done business with before.

Don't know how much money you are talking about, but if it is a lot, maybe time to use an escrow service? Just something to think about.

I would still use paypal if I could. When I bought a boat, I did the downpayment with Paypal, then went and picked it up with a cashiers check in hand.

Look into getting a money order from the Post Office (USPS) since you'll be going the route of certified mail, it's possible they may fight for you in case of fraud.

Exactly (except I haven't sold anything, just bought, lots ) I always check feedback and if it's not better than 97% positive I don't bid. If its a bigger ticket item, I check to see what else the seller has sold in the past. Beware of someone who has sold lots of little $5-10 items and all of the sudden he has something up for a couple hundred. I've been buying on eBay for several years now and never had a deal go bad

Oh and PayPal all the way

as a Fedex guy who delivers things ordered off of ebay frequently, I would be wary of a seller not accepting paypal.. I can't tell you how many instances I and others have seen of COD packages we've delivered only to have the recipient open the package and find.. nothing.. empty box other than packing material.. I hope you have a good experience, but be cautious, the reputable sellers on ebay seem to use / accept paypal.. in the case of COD you can at least cancel the check, but if they demand receipt of your check before even shipping the item... big ol' red flag right there..

If the seller doesn't have at least 97% positive feed back and if they dont take paypal, I buy it from somebody else. I got taken for $30 one time on ebay. I sent a money order and never recieved my item. Never again. I didn't notice that that particular seller didn't take paypal till after I had bid.
