I'm a member of the fat bastard thread already. A position there would just kill me slowly.

Even the two year Im taking now is a bunch of useless classes. College is really summed up from what two of my first year instructors told us:

"Im not here to ruin your lives, nobody is going to care in five years that you took this course or give a damn what you got in it"

"Heres the deal, my job is to show you how to memorize enough of this to pass, and then your employer is going to show you how its really done"

That makes perfect sense to me.

I had a couple of instructors who said:

"I'm not here to teach you the answer to any question. I'm here to teach how and where to find the answer to any question."

Yes, that is the most important thing you get out of college. But, in the sciences, such as accounting, engineering, etc. You learn procedures and rules. Liberal arts is different. Hopefully along the way, you learn how to solve problems and where to find answers. Also how to think for yourself.

A college class is only as good as the instructor. Some are great, some should not be there.

That is something I'm researching.

My dad did it for years for a mining company and the government. Pretty slack job, just the working conditions arent always so great. But if you dont mind rain, heat, snow etc its a pretty cool job.

Yep. After being cooped up in an office, sitting behind a computer all day long for the past, oh I dunno, 10 years, and outside job sounds great.

I keep having Office Space flash backs.

"I told them Id do it, I told them"

When dad was doing it he was way up north. The guys spent time off hunting moose with the locals.

Only thing with surveying companies is you could be sent anywhere. Ran into one guy doing the river banks last year when I was fishing. After that job he was being sent up to the arctic for two months.

Most of the time the pay is really good, and no phone ringing

That's my goal...GET THE FUDGE AWAY FROM THIS DAMN ASPECT PHONE ! ! !

and do something I will enjoy. I like the outdoors.

We have a couple of smaller companies in Athens. I wonder if they would have a problem with me picking their brains, or going on a ride along to get a look at their daily work activities. I'll have to give them a call or stop by.

Jamz, have you ever though of starting your own small company, (tackle shop, maybe boats rentals, bike rentals, what ever, look into grants, low interest loans, etc.. this big in a small way and go for it man. Don't go through life working and unhappy doing it. How about truck driving after a few years under your belt you can get a nice local run and make some decent bucks. I wish you all the luck..
