I been there 4 times and sure to be a dozen or more coming. Place is really quite nasty at ground level. Steaming hot and sand in everything. Every business stinks that Arabic scented incenses and the cheaper the business the more it smells. Most of the country is built by "Slave Labor" by 3rd country nationals.

The culture is very wide based and I've probably seen someone from every modern and stone age country there. The malls there are ungodly huge and extravagant. Best thing about the place was eating at Fudruckers. after 60 days of TCN made grub on the base.

Currently 156 stories tall, a bit over 1,900 feet.

Already the tallest freestanding structure in the world and about to become the tallest structure of any kind . . . ever.

You engineers out there ought to appreciate it.

I am soooooooooo checking this out when it's done.

No joke, only under the dark of night does kobi make an appearance. And he further eludes his comeback by posting inconspicuously in his own 7 month old thread. No "How you doing?" or "Greetings from Kansas!" I'm disappointed...deflated even.

I think he's busy these days making many trips to Home Depot and fixing up his house.

Dubai and UAE has crazy money. They just think up BS ways to spend it.

Underwater hotel

Indoor ski slop int he middle of the desert

BURJ AL ARAB - THE ARABIAN TOWER
This hotel was not even made to make money. It is simply built to be a landmark of the area. Nights stay range from $1,000 to $6,000 and luxry suites at $15,000 a night.

You got that right!

Al Dawaar, Dubai's only revolving restaurant, is located on the 25th floor of Hyatt Regency.....

How about

Dubai's man made "Palm Islands"....

It's crazy over there.

Last thing I saw about this on TV, it is "supposed" to stop at 162 floors.

I say supposed, because everytime they decide to stop, they re-engineer it to go up a few more floor, due to another building that's "supposed" to be taller than this one.

There are rumors now, that they will not challenge it though, so we'll see.

But, at any rate- they'e left the Petronas Towers, Taipei 101, and that building in Canada (Not the mention the Sears Tower) in the proverbial dust.

The Burj Dubai is gonna be a stand out due to it's size, but they plan on adding a bumnch more skyscrappers- which will diminish its appearance, unless seen from afar. When I went to NYC, the Empire State building didn't seem very impressive, because there were so many other tall buildings nearby cluttering the skyline.

Now this.... This is a stand out. Can't miss it.

Taipei 101

This is pretty close to complete. I just hope that barrier looking island, really serves its purpose. Hong Kong esentially built their new airport in the sea as well. That's some serious engineering, I just wonder how sturdy those islands (Palm, "The World", Hong Kong's airport) will be against natural catastrophes, such as earthquakes and the liquefaction that can take place in loose/unstable soils, waves whipped up by cyclones (if applicable in UAE), or the random Tsunami.

Natural islands probably wouldn't fair much better, as far as surface damage- but, I doubt they'd wash away...

Californis did this in the Bay Area too, and built a freeway on top of it- as did China for their access to their High Speed train.

I dont know I had wondered that too, they plan to build housing develpments on them..... seems pretty trusting to me. They showed the mmaking them on dicovery or something a while back and all they did was dredge sand.... nothing really holding them in place.
