Unhappy My first and last motorcycle accident

First and last accident today. Coming home from a night on patrol at around 720. Was in the center U-Turn lane of US Hwy 290 heading west towards Austin behind a minivan. There was a break in traffic in the left lane but not in the right. Minivan went into the left lane and I followed but needed to merge into the right because my exit was the next one.

The van jolted into the right lane and I figure ok normal Austin driver not signaling their turn whatever so I look over my shoulder in the right lane to make sure it's clear for me to follow the van and merge before my exit. Everything's clear so I turn foward to signal and start drifting into the right lane and realize the van jolted into the right lane because traffic was at a dead stop in the left.

Saw a brown F250 standing still about 60 feet in front of me, I was probably going around 35-45 hit the breaks laid it down on the left side and jumped off and rolled down the shoulder. Bike slide under the truck but didn't really do any damage thank God. Of course the accident gets called in as an officer down so here come 7 cars, two fire trucks and one ambulance.

Broken left leg but not really feeling any pain and just thankful that everything really went so well. Amazing how many people and news stations called the department today wanting to know the story of the motorcyle cop that went down.

I told the guy I hit man I'm glad I hit a Ford, had this been a Honda I would have been paying you big bucks, pretty cool guy, gotta love those F250 towing hitches.

I know the thread is worthless without pics so I'll get them uploaded as soon as I can. I know the chief took plenty.

Yea I go to the surgen tommrow to find out whether this fracture is gonna heal its self or whether they are gonna have to go in, they said if they do have to operate that it will be like an ACL surgery and I really can't afford to miss that much work.

Glad you're ok. Last spring at Talladega several of us were on the tram in the infield going outside the track. Two troopers on motorcycles come flying by us to try and beat us through the tunnel. Little did they know traffic was stopped. The first guy got stopped in time. The second guy didn't. He locked up the back brake, slid into his partner and dumped it. Funniest thing I saw all weekend. If he'd gotten hurt, that would have been a different story.

I have thought about trying to get on the motor unit for my department but every guy on the unit has crashed AT LEAST once...no thanks. Take care man, hopefully you'll heal up fine and be back on the street soon.

Hope you've got AFLAC! Sorry to hear about your accident. Motorcycles are a ton of fun, but they sure are dangerous. I've ridden my dad's harley a couple of times, but I don't think that I want one for myself. Just too many unsafe drivers out there for me to be that unprotected.

Yep -- while I really enjoy going out on a bike, I just figure that it's like tempting fate for the most part. I've seen too many buddies with nasty cases of road rash to ever be convinced of buying one for myself. For the guys that have them -- enjoy, but count me out on the game of roulette!

So what kind of bike? I assume like every other department and you were on a Road King? More importantly, what year and if later than.. crap.. '04 I think.. or maybe 02.. was it ABS equipped?

I know you bike cops endure an insane amount of awesome training... was it really unavoidable or driver error? Not trying to poke fun (like I normally would) just understand what went wrong. As a relatively new biker myself I always find myself questioning every accident hoping to learn a little nugget of knowledge so keep my **** off the pavement.

Glad to hear you came out in one piece.

I wanted to get my dad's Suzuki GT-185 out. But the insurance is twice what my truck is. And Ive seen a few really bad spills, and with the luck Ive had with retard drivers over the years Im not gonna tempt fate on the bike

I got T-boned by some jack-*** on my way home from work onthe Friday 4th of July weekend, 2002. My bike has made it out of the shed once since then. Right now it has been sitting for so long that the carbs are all gunked up. I am going to clean them up when it gets warm out, and sell it. I have no desire to ride anymore after that.

The one I saw 3 years ago sealed it for me. After seeing the aftermath I was never getting on one again.
