edited to add. As the wood ages it becomes darker..
I can't do light colored wood... really, just can't do it. It always looks unfinished to me.

Okay, so I've decided to go with the 1"x6"s for the ceiling. I'm going to look into putting them up with out a backer. My question now is what color should I stain them? If I go with a dark walnut floor, and medium walnut trim, should the ceiling match the trim? I'm sure the wife will let me know what to do, but figured I'd get some opinions first...

Thanks!

I would still go with a lighter color for the ceiling. It doesn't have to be a natural finish, a honey color like mine will do. I think if you go with medium walnut it's going to be just too dark. Not only will it make your vaulted ceiling feel a lot shorter but it will absorb light and make your room seem very dark, especially on gloomy days.

Whatever you decide, post some pictures of the final product!!

Not too sure about the wife, but I prefer a dark cozy lving room. I don't like being in a bright "cheery" living room... It just doesn't feel "cozy" or "home" to me... I guess I'm just weird. I also HATE that auto makers are putting tan or light gray headliners, and upper trim in BLACK interiors. I want a black headliner, and trim. I want that dark, closed in feel, but all the "real" room...

My office will be very small, but I'm hoping to do dark wood paneling with the dark wood floor, dark wood shelves/desk, and a copper or tin ceiling. I want that old dark library feel for my office...

I'll definately get pix posted when done...

Not so weird, that sounds exactly like what my husband wants to do with his den/office. It has no window so it's already dim and it is going to double as a spare bedroom; there is a futon in there. We came to a compromise, I requested a light paneling and no tin ceiling. He's going halfway up the wall with a medium color paneling and the upper half will be painted a lighter color. He calls it his den, I call it his dungeon!
