Tax experts...

I looked at irs.gov, but didn't see anything addressing this, figured I'd ask around before making any phone calls...

If married when filing do you have to file your state income taxes under the same status as federal? In other words if you file jointly for federal MUST you file joint for state? does it differ from state to state, etc?

It would be a state law that would govern it. Most states I think would require it as most use your Federal Tax as a starting oint. Just have to check your state law. You may be able to find the answer online.

Virginia has the option.
When filing jointly on the Federal return you can either file Joint or 'Married Seperate' on the state return.

You can slice and dice the Schedule-A between you, however it works best.
